Being a Nike endorser helps,IMO. CNN, BBC, Yahoo Sports, HBO, ESPN, Time Magazine, and other internet boxing sites has featured as the small guy from a poor beginning who rose to become boxing's #1. His conquest of America's darling, dela Hoya, capped his public awareness as a boxing superstar. He's now mainstream, indeed. I won't be surprised he'll endorsement contracts in the US and China despite his broken English.
No. simply because boxing is not mainstream anymore... Irom mike is the last boxer who was recognized by the mainstream audience. he is popular to the fight fans but not mainstream folks.
Adding tons of ads in the US on his bout against Hoya and now Hatton. From beers, commercials, posters etc.. Iron mike became the mainstream because everyone had a Punch-Out game on the old time.
Because of the internet and cable news, Pac is in the mainstream. Having beaten American idol Olympic champ handsome dela Hoya has earned him a second from casual and mainstream fans.
Honestly....I like PAC and all but not yet IMHO. He's very popular in certain areas but he's not like DLH or the ALI's of boxing.
