I love sweet pea and think he is a great head to head fighter. However, I feel that after ring magazine ranked him in thier top 10 of the last 80 years, his lovefest on the internet has gotten out of control. Modern fighters like roy jones jr, manny pacquaio, floyd mayweather always have thier resume picked apart and destroyed. I honestly think pernell whitaker is the one with a very overrated resume.

He fought de la hoya and trinidad at the end of his career, yet pea fans will want you to believe he was fighting these guys in his prime. Pea fans will have you believe he convincgly beat oscar and was robbed, yet I have scored it 7-5 for Oscar, or a draw every time I watched it.

The best atg he ACTUALLY beat were nelson and chavez. Nelson did nothing at 135, chavez was still great, but this fight was at 147 and 1993 isnt exactly prime chavez.

Buddy McGirt and Vasquez were really good fighters in thier day, but the only reason they get propped up is because they are pernell whitaker opponents, otherwise no one would give 2 cents about either. If Floyd fought them, they would be dismissed as bums.

Not to mention the wilfredo rivera debacle, if anything this is the controversial fight. Every time i watched this fight, i have either rivera winning or a draw at best. I cannot imagine mayweather getting a gift against a journeyman, forget about abc champs or very good fighters, rivera is a journeyman! Why isnt pernell getting knocked for this? Even a 37-40 year old mayweather would pick apart any rivera caliber opponent.

I have pernell above floyd mayweather and roy jones on my all time list. However, I feel pacuiao is more accomplished and the boxing media will rank him higher once his career is over.

I don't think he's overrated necessarily. The Nelson victory was very good as was holding Chavez to a draw. I still rank Chavez higher than him, tho. But then again, the 85-89 vintage Chavez was an amazing fighter.

No, you're an idiot. Pea is rated for the Oscar performance because everyone know he was past his prime.

No one rates Pea because of The Ring's awful list.

And Floyd wouldn't stand in front of a prime Felix Trinidad if he knew his legs were gone. Yes, the Rivera fight was a poor showing and he was being given **** for it on here TODAY. **** happens, he gets flak for it, as much as the plaudits he gets for his showing in the robbery against JLR in France.

unified the lw division and then beat the number 1 ww.

Probably deserved a draw with rivera first time round. Beat him well in the rematch though. Gave Oscar a great fight past his prime and gave Tito a bloody good fight as well.

I don't see what your beef is.

After deductions I had the fight with Vasquez a draw.

But seriously? Whitaker even doing as well as he did against a beast of a junior middle like Vasquez is ridiculous.

I never knew direct flaming is allowed on this website, shows great credibility. I could care less if he hung in there with oscar you stupid moron, its not some win that he deserves on his resume, you want to give him credit for oscar, then i'll put whitaker on rivera's resume.

A beast of a junior? Vasquez was slow, plodding, with little to no footwork. Again only reason hes not dismissed is because hes a whitaker opponent, thanks for validing it. Mayweather would have easily outboxed him, then again who is vasquez in the bigger picture, yeah a nobody.

Nearly shutting out both Chavez and Nelson, despite both being past their best is still a phenomenal achievement. The wins over McGirt and Vasquez are both very good wins, both were good fighters, Mcgirt was arguably very good and Vasquez was massive compared to Pea, both wins are really very good and don't have any reason to **** on either of them.

Also most Pea fans, of which I am a very big one agree that De La Hoya deserved the decision, but Pea at that point was an old, drug addict and he still gave a great fighter in ODLH all he could handle, if you can't see why that performance deserves credit then you're just looking to **** on Pea imo.

And the Rivera fight wasn't exactly in Whitaker's prime was it? I think we can probably allow him to not look his best every few years!

So direct flaming isnt allowed when this board whips roy jones, manny and floyd as whipping boys, but when I critize whitaker and point out that he doesnt exactly have an untouchable resume, you get your feelings hurt.:good

Realistically both carlos ortiz and jose napoles probably have better resumes than whitaker. But since they fought way better comp and had losses along the way, they get knocked down the atg lists for it. Im sure both could look invincible against the mediocre guys whitaker kept fighting. Chavez would really be the only test.

He beat a green winky congrats, he must be the reason roy jones or floyd cant rank above whitaker all time.

I swear if whitaker was around in this internet firendly era, I would love to see what type of nuthugging he would actually get.

Pernell is more underrated than overrated. But since he was not exciting he doesn't get the credit he should. Had he fought Duran at lightweight he would have won. And he would have beaten Mayweather also. Speed and defense and sharp punching and even his body punching were greast.

Whitaker looked unstoppable in 1994 and 1995, but his dominance was de-railed by rivera, rivera of all people ended whitaker's status as best pound for pound. Let me know when floyd mayweather ends up having hamburger meat all over his face by a fighter as mediocre as rivera.

Pernell is a great 'ability fighter', but for how long are people going to rank him above manny. I guarantee floyd can pound manny and beat another 147 champ, and he will still get knocked and ranked below whitaker.

From 1987-1996, the biggest tests whitaker faced were mcgirt, vasquez and chavez at welter. Hes a great fighter, but his resume is overrated.
