Manny Steward said Hearns got a rubdown from one of his entourage members and it made his legs weak. I take Manny's statements with a grain of salt. Hagler went right after Hearns before he was cut though. That was right out of the opening bell when he swarmed Hearns. Hearns said he had to trade and get Hagler's respect or he would've gotten mowed over. Hearns did try to box Hagler midway through the first round, and he was having some success circling him and landing some rights, but Hagler cornered him and worked him over on the ropes. By the end of the round, Hearns's legs were doing a dance. They seemed rubbery the rest of the fight.
Many factors as to why MH didn't blast out Duran. 1 he never had the power Hearns had, or the speed (maybe close when younger). 2 Duran came into the hagler fight in top shape, which he didn't for Hearns (not that it would have mattered, may have gone 5-6 rounds instaed of 2). Hearns would always a bad fight for Duran. That slight difference in speed and power allowed Duran to stay in it, though I think if MH had imposed his will he could have ended it. But I believe the Davey more thumb, and his respect for Duran tempered his approach. When I saw the Hagler v Duran fight as it happened I thought it was close, more due to the expectation of a hagler easy win. Watching it later I had Hagler winning 10-11 rounds, again I think the fact of Duran staying influenced the scoring at the time. I also think that if MH didn't blitz Hearns, he still would have worn him down in maybe 7-8 rounds.
I think Hearns and Steward said his legs had been massaged too much and he'd lost strenght in them. I'm not sure how much effect this had on the fight though, I think the big event was Hearns breaking his right hand in round one..after that the had to try and box, legs or no legs. I agree with you about Camacho, he was one hell of a fighter at 130 and 135 and really showed courage that many thought he didn't have as he got older and moved up in weight.:good
Maybe it was true as far as the rubdown. Hagler was very aggresive, but I recall his corner after he got cut saying to Hagler to get him outta there and the sight of his own blood made Hagler crazy. Also, I ask you if this was Hearns first fight at MW?
The fight was a classic but it was only really competive for the first 90 seconds of the first round, the cut made it exciting but it was really just a walk down job for Hagler after that initial minute and a half.
Watch the Hagler Hearns fight again. Hagler goes after Tommy and takes some good shots. About 1 minute in, Hagler hits Hearns with a left then a right, the beginning of the end.
Thank God you posted that, I was REALLY confused for a minute!!!:nut Its a very overlooked aspect of the "9 minute war" that it was only really a war for 60 seconds!!
Why were you confused :huh, Ah yes 60 seconds, maybe some could argue 3 minutes war, but we agree was done after say 90 seconds, Hearns was running badely. I Also don't buy the massage theory, maybe the broken hand but regardless the outcome would have been the same. BTW, the Sweat Pea thread has been hijacked, I apoligize to the original poster.
I havn't watched the fight in a while but theres a point early on in the first round that Hearns cracks Hagler with a great right cross that buzzes Hagler but nothing more. You can see Hagler nodding to himself after the punch as if to say "Good punch, but if thats all you've got this is my fight...."
Nothing, except to show his lack of knowledge of the sport. Why must all boxers be come-foward fighters? :conf I mean, judges today are favouring punches thrown over clean effective punches - even though the art of boxing is "hit and not be hit" Perhaps thats why so many people feel judges today are inadequate.
