I think Leonard is a better technician than Marquez but not Duran.

Whitaker was technically brilliant in areas but also unorthodox in the way he moved like crossing his feet and doing weird things with his body. Whitaker actually done things that would be considered poor technique in lesser mortals.

    Arguello is a great shout.

Yeah, Harold seems to have always been appreciated as one of boxings top tier technicians by fans knowladgeable on historic boxing. But the sad thing is Harold is one of the under appreciated greats. If his name was mentioned in the general 90% of the posters there wouldn't know who he was. I was late in appreciating how good Harold Johnson was myself.

Barney Ross is another old timer noted as being a great technician.

JMM and Leonard are at opposite ends of the speed spectrum. Leonard was known for his lightning feet and hands. And could simply out-athlete basically everybody. Marquez was flat out slow of hands and feet for an elite Featherweight.

So while maybe Leonard is a better technician than JMM, Marquez never had the advantage of being a superior athlete.

Those are good points but wasn't Marquez far more mobile at featherweight ? I certainly don't agree with you in saying Marquez was flat out slow on his feet for an elite Featherweight. I'm not trying to say he moved like Willie Pep or anything but he was definitely far more mobile back then than what we are used to seeing of him in the last ten years or so.

I'll have to go and rewatch some of his 126 and 130 fights to refresh my memory. From what I can remember he was pretty slow for an elite Featherweight, but I will watch some more Marquez fights again. Compared to his contemporaries I remember him being much slower. Pacquiao, Hamed and Morales were much quicker than Marquez. And in his prime Barrera (who was never fast per se) could throw some real crisp combinations too.

He was obviously still typical Marquez at featherweight but a far more lighter/springy on his feet version. Not fast but not slow either.

Marquez was quick and razor sharp. You cant be one of the best counter punchers of all time with slow hands man.

Among Morales, Hamed, Pacquiao, Barrera and Marquez who was the slowest fighter? It's clearly either Barrera or Marquez? And Barrera in his prime was known as a sharp combination puncher.

You don't think Morales had the much quicker feet than Marquez?
