Kelly Pavlik is a drunk and Williams always been overrated he cant avoid a right hand. I like watching the guy fight but he is overrated.
i agree a win over sturm and pirog would be good. But at this moment in time i dont think his resume is that good. far far too many garbage wins in there although fair play recently hes had a good string of opponents
One reason Manny or Mayweather is not fighting Sergio is because Sergio is just not there yet. One more major win, maybe over a Margorito rematch or a Cotto, and then he is a PPV candidate. Just like Berto, Manny and Floyd cannot fight EVERY BODY at one time. They are now going after the people who will put fans in the seats and on PPV. Sergio is not far away, and likely won't be denied too much longer as long as he keeps winning. Is he over rated? He's got some skills. This question might be answered when he steps up against a Peter McQuillan or some other good middle weight. Otherwise and argument could be made that Paul Williams was over rated (as a middle wieght) and that Kelly Pavlik was not all there at the time of their fight, as he admitted to alcoholism problems then.
I don't see how any "garbage" opponents detract from a resume. I mean, you beat whatever good guys you beat, if you also beat a bunch of d-levelers, it doesn't cancel anything out. Wonjongkam, perfect example of having many, many, many d-level guys filling up his numbers, but it doesn't mean anything. Gosh, some really all-time great fighters, like Locche, Loi, Chavez, just filled with that type of fighter alongside their quality wins. That's just earn-a-living fare. Beside resume, there's a good reason why certain fighters don't want to move up and fight him-why the best fighters don't wish to. There's not enough of a skill disparity to likely offset the size disparity, and they know it. He is that good and they and their people know it. :conf
I dont blame Sergio for having a **** pre Cintron resume. The kid starting boxing at 20, clearly he is a talented fighter, but to expect someone to fight top opposition after he is an infant to boxing is ludicrous. I judge him on what he has done after Cintron, and I rate him fine as being the 3rd or 4th best boxer today. If/When Martinez fights Pirog or Sturm and wins, then there is no doubt about his position as one of the best fighters today
Yes he is a good fighter but also overated, to be considered p4p #3 with such a limited resume is absurd, he is 2-1-1 against the known names and best opposition on his resume, he's setting his sights on big pay days now instead of trying to move up and challenge better opposition, his only dominant win is against Paul in their second fight as far as the big names he's fought... I'm not a fan actually because he gets more credit than I feel he deserves, Froch is better and has a better resume as does Ward, Bute has a **** resume but i feel should be held in higher regard than Sergio, Bradley should also be held in higher regard, so should Khan, Maidana, Gamboa, all this fighters are just as deserving or more than deserving than Martinez...
Yea but usually resumes have some poor poor opposition, mostly good wins and some exceptional wins. Sergio is littered with **** wins plus Williams pavlik dzizurnuk. Not enough good wins to cancel out the garbage
Nothing needs to be canceled out. Going against any poor fighters does not take away from the good ones you have fought. Besides, he's only been rated on the p4p list since putting in the Pavlik performance, and only been rated highly since brutally and quickly avenging the only loss he's had in a long, long time, which was obviously controversial. He's not being rated on anything but fighting champions. Three in a row, one much larger, outclassed and face slashed to ****, linear title taken, the next out cold, stopped for the first time, avenging a loss, the last, ruthlessly outclassed and stopped in his first loss and the first time he's even been down as a pro, if I recall correctly. That's why he's on the p4p list, where he is. I don't see how taking any fights on the way up does anything to alter where he should be rated now. If this were the case, I can't even imagine how Chavez Senior would've been regarded in his day. He'd have never been able to "cancel out" his **** wins. :verysad
Transitioning to a new sport at age 20 can be difficult. Most boxers and/or any athlete start off young.. Or maybe he's just a very quick learner. Never the less, that's impressive. There's no need to write down his boxing status. We all know who he's beaten or lost to :good
