Can't argue much about that, but I also thought SRL was actually rather classless in that fight. Rather than simply outbox Duran to a decision, he started taunting him, and throwing bolo punches and things of that nature. But in all fairness, Duran did it to a lesser extent to him in their first fight. I personally think it was the fear of Duran being humiliated that caused him to quite, more than anything else. I'm quite certainly getting knocked out or losing by decision wouldn't have bothered him nearly as much.
No, nearly every fighter post-80s when the creation of IBF made ducking big fights at your weight oh so easy
lol that didn't come to mind, especially considering I rate Mayweather at around late 30's in ATG rankings and SRL around 15th, but that's a decent example. This is unfortunately true. It is telling that of the modern eras, IMO only Pacquiao makes the Top 20, with Whitaker being just outside the Top 20.
It depends how much you value consistency. Consistency is a rather hard thing to do, even for the greatest.
Yeah, in rd 7 he clowned around there for a bit. I can see how Duran felt that he would be taunted like that on the way to losing a decision, unable to land anything of significance in their exchanges, and rather quit. But as you said, he's not alone in taunting his opponents even if hardly any instances are as famous/infamous as that one. Duran did it to him in their first fight. Frazier did it to Ali in their first fight and Ali of course frequently applied tactics of that nature. Getting into your opponent's head is part of the game.
Not to mention Duran's classless antics before and after the fight. I don't buy that Duran quit because he felt that Leonard's antics were demeaning or beneath him. Viruet mugged and clowned plenty in his fights with Duran, and Duran certainly wasn't above fouling opponents when he was angry with them.
You PM me with with your flight details from wherever you are to Malaga airport. I will give you instructions from there to a place where I will be waiting alone. I will be able to see your approach from 5 kilometres in all directions. Make sure you are in the model and colour of hire car I stipulate. As you get out of the car make the same paedophilic remark you made about my grandson, and you will find out whether or not I give a fuk about your gentle nature or not you perverted scum. Don't book a return ticket.
Beating the best ever is a HARDER thing to do than doing what many boxers can do - consistency. If you're good enough to beat certain lesser opposition and you want paychecks, consistency is a by-product. It will never be as great as consistency against great opposition. The worse opposition don't push you into realising upper echelons of greatness, the very peak.
If he felt like he was in the fight, I don't think it would have bothered him much. After all, this was the biggest rivalry in boxing at the time, a title fight and a huge event. You don't quit that because the other guy is a meanie. Duran felt he couldn't win, and didn't fancy being taunted on his way to a loss - like he himself had done to Leonard five months Before. So he quit. That's the most reasonable explantion I think.
Sorry to hear that you get abuse like that. And sorry also that there persons like that frequenting this forum. Mods, shouldn't you ban Foxy?
