Is sugar Ray Leonard the greatest welterweight?

The best WW? , how many times did he defend his title?

 

Don't think the premise of the argument centers around that particular aspect, Gest. :yep Of course, you're asking a rhetorical question, but it's rather to do with his top end wins and very visually evident attributes, skills and abilities (H2H if you will). I assume. Hell, I think Ray Robinson has a great argument for the Greatest Middleweight and he wasn't much for racking up defenses at 160. Then again, he beat LaMotta (x5), Fullmer, Turpin, Olson (x4), Basilio, Graziano, Villemain, Belloise, Castellani (heh), Abrams, etc etc etc

 

Talking now prime for prime, S. Though SRL had the same hand speed, flash 'n flare for the dramatic as SRR, SRL admitted he copied SRR, 'n he was damn good at it, but his fire power -- 'specially combos, which were shoes shines to buy time, not Robinson's killer shots. Plus, SRL wasn't as durable as SRR.

In a shoot-out, SRL would come out second best.

 

Good point. Robinson was one of the only guys that could throw those blinding flurries and have something on them. Leonard`s were more show punches.

 

Come on now, Leonard threw deadly combinations. If you think he was a "shoe-shiner" then you haven't watched the man.

 

how is everyone so certain srr is betterr than srl, what is the video or the fight u are looking at that show cases the skills, I just haven't seen enough leonard to proclaim him the greatest in all of boxing history, what makes him so great? I've seen a bit of him, sure he is good but what am i missing

 

I principle I agree with you that there's too little footage of Robinson at WW to make a really detailed comparisons with other fighters. But in reaility I can't agree with you on anything after you made a thread in the lounge about "setting the record straight" on Jews not being white.

I mean, what the ****. If someone that stupid says something relevant about anything it must be according to the "even a broken clock is right twice a day"-principle. Nothing you say anymore can be taken seriously. That's what I think of you.

Regarding 'The Cuban Hawk' .....Kid Gavilan

Strating his career in April 1954 thru July 1946, 'The Cuban Hawk' was
fighting at Featherweight and Lightweight, where he compiled a 23-2-0 (7 KO's) record.

From August 1946 thru April 1, 1954 (71/2 years), while competing at Welterweight.

The man posted a record of 65-11-4 (21 KO's).

His 'Pinnacle of Performance' ended then at age 28 years, 3 months,
with an overall record of 98-13-4 (28 KO's).

From April 1, 1954 and on, for the next 4+ years, 'The Cuban Hawk' posted
a record of 10-17-1 (2 KO's).

Not sure on the 'factors', but his record up to April 1954 was incredible, and
he looked like he would have been able to handle Ray Leonard on 'Even Terms'.

 

H, what make Robinson so great at WW ? Because I SAW him in his welterweight prime ringside and NEVER saw a fighter to COMPARE to him.
NEVER...Ray Leonard was a great talented WW. No doubt...But if he ever fought Robinson both in their welterweight primes, I suggest that Ray Leonard disgard the nickname Sugar,as Ray Robinson would be VERY motivated to destroy anyone using the appelation Sugar, as a darn good Welterweight George "Sugar " Costner found out twice...

Oh, I'm sure you'd find plenty of interesting tidbits; many of which definitely not in his favor. I don't see the outrage with the third Graham fight. Like, at all.

 

Yeah I watched him shoeshine.

When Leonard flurried he didnt have the concussive power like Robinson did. A simple fact.He used them at the end of rounds to sway the judges.

 

One ringside reporter called them "popcorn punches" punches that look devastating to the easily swayed crowd but arn't actually doing any damage.

SRL although a certified ATG gets overrated a tad, he makes the top 5 IMO but not number 1, no siree bob. SRR at WW cannot be touched.
