was ottkes mother and father closely related or did he have some kind of gypsy genetics he was 1 ugly mofo
Lance hit it, he's underrated, because he was better than everyone here thinks he was. He's universally hated on these boards, of course he's underrated.
Even Mitchell thought he lost that fight - no robbery there - only thing coming close was the judge with Mitchell as the winner!
Ottke and the way his career was controlled was a disgrace to boxing. His last 4 fights were all controversiel still he was allowed to be called a superchamp... What a fraud he was...
I am 99% cetain Mitchell won. I guess I will have to go back and watch it. It was a while ago and I could be wrong.
i saw ottke fight more times than i ever wanted to. believe me. :yep he was a fairly good pts scoring fighter. fairly fast hands. could get around the ring when he needed to. but no way was he a great fighter. just a decent well schooled boxer who would have been a regular top 10 opponent but for his hometown advantages.
Are you asking whether he was underrated or whether he would have beaten a prime RJJ/Toney/Benn/Calzaghe? I think he may be slightly underrated (I've heard people say he was the worst champion of all time, think that's harsh) but he couldnt have gone anywhere near the fighters that you name. I voted no in answer to your second question
i think the fact he retired without bothering to try and meet calzaghe shows that he was just in it for the paydays. the german networks were getting good ratings and he got in good crowds. he just milked it and then retired without doing the right thing. if he had fought calzaghe and won he would have gone down as a great fighter. atsch
he was good enough to hang with those guys. no way would he have been blown away or anything like that. too well schooled for that. but i agree he would have lost on neutal soil to those guys. :good
Absolutely ****in' guaranteed Calzaghe would have beaten Ottke given fair officials. Ottke wouldn't go within million miles of Calzaghe, which is why he retired 'undefeated', rather than face JC for by far his biggest payday
Once visiting friends in Germany I saw a competition (some guessing game) in a weekly magazine. The winner was rewarded tickets to an Ottke fight. Now listen! The runner up received tickets for TWO Ottke fights. :yikes
The Warren offer was below what Ottke made in a regular fight at home - how do you get that to be a career high payday???
