I enjoy combat sports, so I like both. But I've been watching boxing for about 35 years longs than MMA so I still prefer a good boxing match. But a good/great MMA fight, beats a bad boxing match hands down.
Seems like good boxing matches happen less and less every year.. I blame that on matchmaking. This is one of the reasons why I have prefered to watch MMA over boxing over the past few years. Matchmaking in MMA isn't head and shoulders above boxing, but the top mixed martial artist seem to fight more entertaining fights. Other than his fight with Patrick Cote, where he waited for counters, Anderson Silva looks to finish fights. He wanted to submit Sonnen, and he did, being the dynamic striker that he is, he finishes you off after picking you apart. In contrast to Manny Pacquiao, who showed mercy on Margarito, Cotto, and Clottey. If it weren't for Freddie Roach telling him to finish the fight after the 11th round, he would have taken Cotto the distance also. I know that GSP can stink up the joint for some, but Pacman and Silva are comparible being two dynamic strikers. There is just so much wrong in boxing today that makes MMA appear that much better when it is only marginal IMO.
I much prefer MMA fights generally but the flow and mastery of an elite boxing match still lights me up!
the fundamental difference in the matchmaking is that a boxing promoter will assess his fighters weaknesses then decide who they should avoid. In mma if you have a weakness in your game theyll match you with someone who is strong in that aspect because people want to see the contrast play out.
