I don't think the article stated the fight had to be in Germany, but I could be wrong about that. Fighting in Germany was the only way this fight would have made money though because AA nor Winky, at this point, would draw the money Winky seems to want. But yeah, he would have to win by KO in Germany and breaking AA's jaw doesn't count there. :D

He's probably done now, but what I found funny was that he moved up WAY out of his comfort zone, pushed Bernard Hopkins in a close, close fight and then he dropped off the p4p charts and Hopkins moved up as if he proved himself the better of the two p4p.

He most certainly DID NOT prove himself the better fighter p4p and I think it's a shame because Winky really lost some credibility amongst a lot of fight fans when he should not have, and then it became hard for him to get another fight, since he was a high risk low reward proposition at the bargaining tables.

Ultimately though, he probably shot himself in the foot by not taking the Taylor rematch imo. I thought Winky won their fight, but he should not have had a sook and refused to fight Taylor again. A win there against Taylor would have put him in the box seat for a match with Pavlik, and even if that didn't come off, he always had 154 to go to, where he would definitely have beat the likes of DLH and Forrest.

Going up to 170 for Hopkins was just a bad outcome for him....

    What's left for him now?

Well, should Pavlik lose against Hopkins (not an altogether unlikely scenario imo) I wouldn't mind seeing Winky fight him back down at 160, or even if he can still come down to say 156 or so (probably not), perhaps he could take on a Paul Williams. Both those fights would be entertaining given the style mixes imo.

If he called it a day though, that would probably be best.

Maybe not. But when was Winky's last paycheck? He has NO bargaining power left for a big fight.

I have not heard anything about him in a while. I know they were talking about a paul williams fight (presumably at 160) havent seen anything in the local news about winky, though I dont read the sports section here.

In the HBO Countdown to Hopkins/Winky and i also believe in the press conference leading up to the fight, Hopkins said that after their fight, Winky would end up on a milk carton and end up missing. Boy was he right. :yep

I don't think he wanted anything to do with Taylor again. He will never admit it but he felt JT's power and didn't want to face that for 12 rounds again. Don't get me wrong, it was a great fight and close but i don't think Winky wanted to endure that again.

As for his fight with Hopkins, he was suckered into it. With his, "fight anyone, anywhere" mentality, he was an easy guy to sell the fight to.

Winky is doing himself a disservice by continuing to turn down fights. I can understand Wright turning down the offer to fight Abraham in Germany as he feels he has been on the losing end of too many close decisions that could be attributed to favoritism. Winky should have taken the Pavlik fight when it was offered. No doubt he is still trying to win that Golden payday with De La Hoya. It' a shame really - because if he would jump back in with the middleweights and win a title shot - he could end up on top of the division. A set of middleweight championship belts would serve him well in drawing De La Hoya into the ring with him.

Hell, I'd pay 40 or 50 bucks for Winky vs Paul Williams, especially if it had a half decent undercard to go w/it. That'd be a good fight. Think between PW and Winky they could draw enough in the states to make it work? Winky vs AA would entertain also but probably could only go PPV in Europe, huh? Winky should get down off his pony and take a fight before he gets entirely too old...meh...Pav and AA would massacre him anyway, at this point...

That's an interesting point, he's not that old and he doesn't take a lot of beatings in the ring, he could probably fight on for the next 3-4 years if he ever gets the fire back to get in the mix,

if winky had won the Hopkins fight we would be talking about him now instead of hopkins and he would be having these super fights, I think he is just waiting for a good oppurtunity, which btw, fighting Abraham in Germany is NOT, he would never knock AA out and would not get a decision in germany 90% of the time with his style of fighting

Maybe. I didn't get the feeling that Wright got hurt all that much against Taylor, but he probably thought he couldn't do any better than what he did, and that if it wasn't good enough to get him the nod, nothing he could do would.

IMO, even if he didn't fight Taylor again, he should have bided his time at 160 or even gone down back to 154 rather than making a move to 170, where he had no business being at all.

He sure was. I wish he would get more respect though for even taking the challenge. I mean, he basically went up 16 pounds in weight over the space of 2 years, which is quite phenomenal. After giving Taylor and Hopkins close fights, he did not deserve to go out the way it appears he has/will.

DLH is an irrelevant fighter. Wright hasnt fought in over a year and he has the skills to win a belt at 154 or 160. He is 37 though and I question whether he is still in boxing. He is wasting the twilight of his career when he could be fighting and making himself a lock for the HOF

The problem with Winky is that because of his big wins he thinks he is a Prize Fighter and never understood that you have to Knock people the **** out to be a real Prize Fighter. I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to fight AA in Germany. He should just fight Forrest. I really can't think of anyone else who would fight him. Perhaps he might become a P4P gatekeeper for the young middleweight champs.
