I don't read too much into how long he took, the fact is he is untested and needed the rounds. Perez is more seasoned, but down the line Davis will easily beat the likes of Perez.
He's only 21 and has plenty of time, there's no reason to rush him, like Tarver said he has plenty to learn. The one thing that didn't impress me was his footwork and he seemed to walk in straight lines far too much.
But, for a TV fight, he was exciting, has talent. He's no Mayweather so he should focus on his power, head movement, footwork and he'll have a great future.
He still needs 5-6 fights before I put him in with a top-ten fighter. Needs a couple more years until then.

Sanchez is hardly "subpar". He's been a solid enough guy in Mexico for a while. He's capable of springing the upset and testing guys from time to time. Davis did reasonably well to pass this particular test in the manner that he did. He's still a work in progress- but there's a bit of talent there and I'd like to see if and how it develops.

Why are people hating on him?

He looked fine, has a bunch of things to work on, by we all knew that before the fight. He again showed nice skill and big power. I know the comentators got a bit carried away, but that's what they do.

right, that guy. A "bum" cannot beat a dude who lost lost via robbery to a titlist.

he may be a "gatekeeper" but not a bum.

Not sure how high this Davis kid's ceiling is but he has some of the best CCA in the game. He needs to step up his comp though, that Sanchez dude is old, undersized, has been extremely inactive and he's 3-10-2 in his last 15.

He also beat Abner Mares brother Adan Mares. He's obviously not a "bum" or "subpar".

Agree completely on the footwork being too linear

I'd say he ignored his jab at times and was very left hand happy

His offense opened in the last few rounds and that's why he was able to finally stop the guy

That said I think some of these posters are a bit too critical
