    Dante Cane had a chance at the big-time, when he fought George Chuavlo
    in November 1968.

    A victory over Chuvalo would have put Dante Cane in line for a 1969 shot at the
    WBA Crown (Jimmy Ellis), a Madison Square Garden bout with Buster Mathis,
    or a bout with 'Old Man' Sonny Liston.

    I've heard that Ros may have been as short as 5'9". As for the Bugner fight, Bugner won wide and easy, but was made to look inept. Somehow Ros penetrated Bugner's guard sometimes, from what I read. Ros's punches didn't make any impact on Bugner, but Bugner was embarrassed nonetheless. I think Bugner had a hard time punching down at Ros, too.

    Does anyone know the final score, in rounds?

    Months later, Bugner had a similar experience with Mario Baruzzi in Denmark. This bout ended in the 10th round. Everyone was disgusted: boxing people didn't like that Bugner couldn't cleanly dispatch such an outclassed foe, the promoters and TV people didn't like that Bugner vs The Italians made such ugly, boring fights, Bugner's people didn't like the damage done to his reputation by his inefficiently beating these awkward, roly-poly Italians, and EBU officials didn't like that Bugner's challengers were obviously so incapable of threatening him.

    I think after the Baruzzi bout, EBU officials announced there'd be a moratorium on making Bugner defend against mandatory Euro challengers.

    I haven't seen Bugner vs Ros and Baruzzi, but I think the action went somewhat like Bugner vs Lovell, which can be viewed on youtube. Only difference is that Ros and Baruzzi hung in there over the long stretch.

    No way Cane was considered for Ali in 1976! I started following boxing obsessively in 1975, reading every magazine and news article I could find. I don't remember any talk about Ali vs Cane. Cane, who was KO'd by Bugner in early 1975, had fallen off of the radar screen by then.

    As a matter of fact, in 1976, Cane was no longer in position to get a Euro title fight. I remember his name had fallen to around 5th or 6th in the European ratings. Dunn, Bunny Johnson, Coopman, and Bernd August were at the top of the Euro ratings.

    Dante Cane was mentioned as a possible opponent for early-1976.

    Even before the name Jean-Pierre Coopman was heard throughout the world.

    No big write-ups, just a list of possible fighters who Muhammad Ali could
    use to add to his farewell tour.

    Where did you read this? Just in Dick Young's column, and nowhere else? I am dumbfounded. I know King was looking seriously at Jean-Pierre Coopman, who at least was on a winning streak and was rated #1 in the Euro rankings, making him Bugner's mandatory challenger. When Bugner snubbed a Coopman match and dumped the Euro title belt, it was generally believed that Coopman could win the vacant Euro title by beating another Euro bum. So, Coopman vs Ali at least made some kind of sense, even if that sense is twisted and far-fetched.

    But Cane was something else altogether....

    I just remember Dante Cane being mentioned as a possible challenger.

    Ali was looking for an easy fight, and Cane had some name recognition in
    New York (as he had fought in Madison Square Garden a couple of times).

    Jean-Pierre Coopman was ranked #17 by Ring Magazine, and was a complete
    unknown outside of Belgium.

    I still recall Dick Young's articles when listing possible foes for Muhammad Ali
    on his 1976 schedule. Dante Cane was on the 'Tomato Can' or 'Bum of the Month' list.

    Which Dick Young also followed up with a 'Please, No More Mr. Bugner' article.

    Dante Cane's biggest fight,,,

    November 1968 versus George Chuvalo in Toronto, Canada.

    Dante signed for that fight, as it was supposed to be some kind of
    Heavyweight Elimination bout.

    The big Italian came back over to America in late-September, to start training
    for that bout. I believe he was up in the Catskills (upstate New York).

    In early-October, he took a tune-up fight with Jerry Tomasetti (who he KO'd earlier
    in his career). Cane repeated the win, with another Knock-out victory.

    The fight with Chuvalo was part of a Closed-Circuit telecast with Sonny Liston vs.
    Roger Rischer.

    The winners of each bout were supposed to be in-line for a shot at the WBA
    Championship, held by Jimmy Ellis.

    Bepi Ros was the man,,,,,,,,,,,,

    Joe Bugner said hitting 'Bepi' was like hitting a block of cement.

    Bepi was better than Ron Stander or Terry Daniels.
