No your not alone mate , and what makes me sick is Juanma is paraded as Puerto Rico's poster boy and they have one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world and he bairly gets a mention !!!! The man is world class , he's really technical and so so sharp , he's amazing to watch , if you like that sort of thing !!!! In summary i think he's a terrific fighter :good
I love watching the Iron Boy great little technician and I actually prefer watching the lighter weights faster paced. I hope that his fight with Segura is on Primetime.
I used enjoy him but I think hes on the slide now. His last fight was not as one sided as the scorecards suggested and the fox sports commentators comparing him to Willie Pep atsch I think he has enough to beat Segura whos quite limited but I think if Gonzalez or Joyi moved up in weight they could both beat him. In saying that I used be a big fan of his and hes certainly one of the best technical boxers of our generation
Beautiful Boxer (no homo). But recently i haven't enjoyed his fights. Due to either sub standard opposition or head clashes. I didn't like the way he pulled out against Mayol...but he took his choice..same night Cotto fought on like a true warrior but great technician. Segura is a very good fight...got me re interested in watching ''Ironboy''
I really am excited for this Segura clash. As Mandanda said his recent fights have been really disappointing, his reflexes aren't quite there anymore IMO and Segura, despite being limited, is bigger, stronger and throws like theres no tomorrow. Against this version of Calderon we could see the first loss coming for the little wizard. If Calderon does pull it off impressively then hes back in P4P contention.
It's probably frustrating for him that he doesn't have the competition at the weight because nobody has been able to cement themselves. Solis was touted as his main rival at the weight and would have made a good addition to his resumé; lost to Viloria, who then lost to Tamarra who then lost in his first defense. There was Sosa aswell and now Casimero unexpectedly. His best chance of improving his resumé now would seem to be Gonzales/Joyi moving up or him moving back down.
I logged on briefly last night to see what everyone's opinion was but, in all honesty, I was too pissed to read! It's good to see that Calderon's talent is appreciated by so many. He may not be the most "exciting" fighter in the World but he exemplifys everything a pure boxer should. I think its such a shame that the casual fan rarely, if ever, appreciates anything under the Super-Bantamweight division because although comaparisons between Calderon and Willie Pep are daft, he is one of the best boxers to have graced our sport in the last 30 years.
Those weight divisions are sparse, hard to really give him too much credit unless he'd been utterly dominating the limited talent around there. He has had close fights though and deserves to be nowhere near the top end of a P4P list. He is quite obviously good, just not that good. People will often big him up to feign an insight into boxing. "Ivan Calderon is great, he has beaten all these wonderful straw weights, who I as an expert have actually heard of." No, all those Flyweight are actually mediocre at best and Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward should be placed above Calderon in any respectable P4P list. I wish they would just delete all weight divisons below Bantam.
