If a fighter has a group of people who consistently overate that fighter to a great degree, that's another reason why it can turn into a full blown attack on them.

You say this is because of a grudge, I say it's because the persistent over-rating of the fighter might just generate the problem. If I posted thread after thread about Burley being p4p #3, or Flowers being the best MW ever h2h, I promise you, that fighter would get tanked in those threads too.

ESB is, generally speaking, a pretty good judge IMO.

I don't think it would tell any story at all, it's what is contained within the thread that matters. In many ways, Dempsey is the problem for ESB. I don't think there's any other fighter that has so much distance between his harshest critics and his most insistent fans.

Speaking personally, in my time here, there has never been any fighter where there is so much violent resistence to criticism. I'd agree with you that this does tell it's own story, but I'd disagree with you about what that story is.

One or two things have become a little clearer to me personally these past few days, it seems as though the people who rate Dempsey 1-3 do so because they are ranking HW's head-to-head, a matter for opinion and less offensive than what is more standard practice around here.

ESB ranks Dempsey #8 in poll form, which I think is OK, though probably the high-end of what I would like to see (he comes in 11-14 for me).

I think that most of the people who you are thining of when you ask me to count up the threads which ammount to attacks on Dempsey, would accept this ranking as reasonable. It's when Dempsey starts to creep in to the top 5 that tension begins to creep in to debate. Hence, my point of view on the problem.

I tend to rate him in the low part of the top 10 but a higher rating isn't out of the question. The IBRO who I believe represents a number of knowledge people on the subject rates him 4th all time on their heavyweight list, so there's room for discussion as to whether or not a top 5 rating is justified.

Personally I think longivity and lack of quality opposition works against him cracking the top 5, but as mentioned, there's plenty of room for debate. He, like Foreman, certainly make a splash on the way to the top.

i think the ratings of dempsey among the heavyweights is like rating holmes or sonny liston or george foreman.
some have them as high as top 2 or 3 of all-time, others have them outside the top 10. with all four of them i can see the perspectives for having them that high or that low. it shouldnt be any cause for elaborate or lengthy arguments

I think with all fighters they basically rate within a range, with some ranges tighter than others. For example Ali & Louis tend to get the 1-3 range, Holmes usually in the 3-6 or thereabouts, Lewis, Johnson Foreman tend to be in the 3-8, etc. The hardest one for me to wrap my head around is Jeffries. Mainly because he had so few fights. So when he gets on someone's top 5 ATG list I find it fairly hard to comprehend. Yet the IBRO also has him 7th I believe.
