If you watch and listen to the video, you'll know he says no such thing. Max Baer Jr mentions the 'on this night' part. Jack says 'one of the greatest if not greatest fighters the US public has ever had and I predict he will remain champion for a long, long time'

Even on that basis it is seems to be an evaluation of potential rather than a retrospective analysis.

You might also factor in the time when the statment was made.

Are you perhaps reading a bit too much into this?

The Baer that fought Louis wasn't Prime he had bad hand problems and wasn't dedicated. Not saying Baer would win but a Prime Baer had the power to ice Louis and hang in there much longer than he did and even then Louis hit him with everything but the kitchen sink and Baer hung in there Louis landed some sick flush punches on him.

I agree I think Max could def. have KO'd Louis if he was truly motivated to fight and didn't have any injuries going into the fight. With his size, durability, stamina and of course his punch he could've caused an upset IMO. If they rematched Louis would probably win tho.

The Baer that fought Louis was a young man , the same one that destroyed Schmeling and Carnera and the same one that clowned his way to a loss over Braddock ... Physically he was in his prime .. he was about 26 or 27 ... excuses about him being past his best are simply excuses .. the Louis fight proved how limited he was against a higher level of fighter ... Baer was destroyed, losing every second of the fight and basically throwing in his own towel rather than going out on his shield ... Baer was a tough guy with many flaws and very limited skills ... even if they were all maximized through tireless education he would never have been one of the all time greatest, simply better.

More to the point, Jack Dempsey promoted Max Baer v Max Schmeling.

The promoter of the fight ..... making a statement about the winner of the fight (his own protege) ..... immediately after the fight.

Yeah, we should always take that kind of thing with a pinch of salt. :good

Max Baer was a very promising prospect at that time though, it has to be said.
His win over Schmeling was very impressive.

The reason Louis KO'd Baer is that both could punch very very hard, but Louis was faster and threw his punches in more compact blazing fashion, and was more precise. Louis showed some pretty good D and a solid chin early in the first round as Baer took it to him, but the old adage is be careful about attacking a puncher, because you can be hit too. Baer went for broke to tag and hurt Louis early, and may have slightly stunned him, but he just awakened the tiger and Louis unloaded a vicious fast counter assault and Baer was never the same after that in that fight. Louis exhibited some nice footwork and head movement too in that fight, rolling and moving ever so slightly to avoid blows or to place himself in proper position to land well. A beautiful performance by Louis against an elite fighter. One of his best.
