Name thirty of Ali's contemporaries who could have beaten him given the fact he virtually cleaned out the division in two decades. Thank you in advance.
Gotta love the argument that because Cooper knocked down a relatively green Ali and Frazier gave him a tough fight Dempsey is going to knock him out within five rounds even though he was stopped only once in sixty seven pro fights at 39 years old when he was in the nascent stage of Parkinson's and his corner threw in the towel after ten rounds.
Ali wins, but Dempsey performs better than expected. Ali was famously susceptible to the left hook, and Dempsey had a marvellous one. Not to mention that Dempsey had a pressure style that Ali was famously bothered by. That being said, Ali's superior speed and size advantage will win him this one.
I wondered what had happened to him. Anyone who had exchanged with him in the past and over time would know that there was a very generous dose of the 'Tongue-in-Cheek' in that post. A bit like me saying that I know he was a huge Lennox Lewis fan
His love for the likes of Lewis and Duran was simply unbridled. He was a quality needler too, reasonably subtle and hitting the right chords if someone didn't know better. But he put forward good debates against the guys he disliked at times, even if a little too passionately to a keen eye LOL I thought he'd be back by now in some shape or form.
Check from post #74 on to see the full story. He replies to me a page or so later. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/what-is-your-assessment-of-jack-dempsey.619091/page-6
Muhammad Ali was with Cus D'Amato and Cus was telling Ali how Dempsey's style would not be effective vs Ali. So by looking at footage of both Ali and Dempsey. And hearing a boxing guru like Cus explain it aswell to me it's a no brainer Ali all day every day.
Semi older Arcel liked Louis as the greatest (or atleast as great as any) champion, but said Dempsey was as great as one could rightly ask a fighter to be. HBO video Arcel talked about Dempsey picnic'ing on the current heavyweight crop, though this was between Holmes's hayday and the rise of Tyson. I've seen somewhere (c. Tyson's prime) a Arcel citation that he thought Tyson-Dempsey would be a tremendous encounter. As he aged further, Arcel became more pro-Dempsey, admitting (of Dempsey's successors) that Louis and Ali would have had a chance with prime Jack. Some say there are later taped interviews with Arcel where he has prime Dempsey murdering everyone.
I generally rate Jack Dempsey higher than most do, but Muhammad Ali would have beaten Jack by decision in my book. I doubt if Jack would have hit Muhammad with anything significant.
