Terrell and Machen were top 5 fighters. The Terrell rematch was a close fight where Cleveland landed the bigger punches. Big Cat was also avoided. No shame in losing to Liston and he'd literally been shot and lost much of his colon when he faced Ali.

The SD loss was controversial as most (including the associated press) had Williams the winner. Similarly against Machen, he received a majority draw. One judge had him up by 3 points! Nobody scored it for Machen. As with the Terrell bout, the majority also had Williams the winner against Machen.

Too bad he was shot in 1964, Cleveland Big Cat Williams was supposed to fight Ernie Terrell for the WBA Title in March 1965, he had kayoed Ernie in their first fight in 1962. He hit hard enough to break Sonny Liston's nose in 1959, before being knocked out by Liston. He was avoided by Ingo and Patterson in that era, because of his punching power. Jack Dempsey who completely beat up Jess Willard in 1919 to win the title would be wary of Williams power by bobbing and weaving to get in body shots to the body of the Big Cat, tiring him out. Jack will not exchange with Cleve. Jack takes him out by round 10,

I think Sharkey was better than Machen, for the watered-down shot of bottom shelf whiskey that's worth.

Excellent break down. My thoughts exactly.

Good Post, too bad he got shot in 1964, he could have been champion, he was supposed to fight Ernie Terrell for the WBA Title in 1965, instead Eddie Machen did and lost.

Both fights were very close. I've never seen too much hubbub over either being overly controversial to be fair. Good close fights that could go either way or to a draw.

Who fought more black fighters in their career Jack or Louis?
Edit: this is a legit question as Louis only faced 8 his whole career (at least that’s what was said in a post) did Dempsey top that?

I think Dempsey would get to Big Cat in the early rounds- Big Cat would exchange and Jack would love that - Jack beats Big Cat to the punch and wins by KO from 1-3

I don't know. I know Louis fought the best black boxer of his era and Dempsey didn't. And I know Dempsey didn't fight another after black fighter after John Lester Johnson broke his ribs

throws his left hook uppercut exactly how Ruddock did with his smash. Devastating shot, but one that leaves them open a bit

Dempsey did meet at least some black fighters in his career, iirc, not too sure how many, the last one being , again iirc, John Lester Johnson in 1916 and that bout was officially a no-decision affair with varying accounts as to how it went.
I think Dempsey at his vicious best would likely beat Cleveland Williams, who looks a little like he was better at punching than taking them. Jack at his best is probably too quick, aggressive, elusive and good overall and stops him mid to late on in the fight, but might have off the canvas to do it. It would be good while it lasted.
