Joe is too vulnerable in the early rounds. If Bonavena and Stander hurt him, I'd be afraid for him in the first round against Dempsey.
Another point is the accuracy of these punches, I've seen numerous bouts with one fighter hurt and the other winging in punches, one in every 3 missing or glancing off shoulders, elbows, gloves, the majority of Dempseys are hitting Willard bang on the money
Now I don't wanna pick it apart, but....Both Ellis and Quarry thought Joe was easy to tag with a right hand, and both of them did but with little effect. My pick here depends on how much harder Jacks right hand was then Quarrys as I have no doubt he would hit home plate with it several times early on. That right hand by Ali in their second go had Joe on ***** street, can't see that Jack wouldn't have done the same.
Really? Many might disagree with this. Joe was definitely more limited, though. Doesn't the second bold go both ways?
When Ray Arcel was asked by Barry Thompkins whether Jack Dempsey could compete with todays HW's (Today being the 70's) Ray answered "Compete? My God he'd have a picnic! These fellows today are good performers but they can't compare with the great Jack Dempsey" I think that statement speaks volumes about Dempsey coming from a man who had seen them all. And while I don't believe that Jack would have a picnic, I do think he could hold his own and maybe better against fighters of the modern era and that includes Frazier. I voted a coin toss and would'nt be shocked if it went either way but one thing tends to make me lean owards Dempsey if only a little and that's Joe's tendency to get hurt early in a fight before he's warmed up. Quarry, Ellis, Bonavena, Ali and even Stander were able to hurt Joe early although they could'nt finish the job. If Jack hutrs Joe early and I believe he would due to his mode of attack then he stands a good chance of ending it, a very good chance. If he can't then Joe's chances improve with each passing round. It's either Jack early or Joe late and I call it a coin toss.
Dempsey hadn't peaked yet when he fought Flyn. As for Firpo, remember that Dempsey got back into the ring and knocked him out.
Frazier versus "Dempsey or Marciano" would be a WAR! However, I must go with Smokin' Joe here against either dude...... I just cannot picture dudes' like Dempsey or Marciano at 187 to 192 pounds being able to keep a 206 to 209 pound Joe Frazier off for 10, 12 or 15 rds......... Frazier would apply pressure unlike them two dudes' had ever seen before.... And since both Dempsey and Marciano were there to be nailed at times, Frazier's hook shot would find the mark often enough to make a huge dent in the jaws of Demspey and Marciano...... People from way back can either laugh or scoff all they want to, but I believe Jack Dempsey and Rocky Marciano would have their hands full and be in the fights of their lives against dudes' like "Quarry & Bonavena" in a time machine........ All good match-ups........ bbbhat MR.BILL
Very hard to compare men from such different time periods... If pressed I would say either Dempsey early because of Frazier being a notoriously slow starter... Or Frazier later in the fight if he comes through Dempsey's early onslaught... Like I said before though these's mens primes were exactly 50 years apart so it is very hard to picture them sharing a ring together.
To be honest that was on a 'Boxings Best' program about Dempsey, the program was basically a celebration of Dempseys life and career. I doubt Ray would say anything negative about Jack on it even if he thought it to be true
Not a bad pick but not surprised either. You generally make points based on weight advantage. It's something you factor in a little too much, especially considering Dempsey is the superior puncher and is probably equally as strong as Frazier. I disagree on your pick against Rocky, though.
