Maximum Baer has got a punchers chance, as he does against just about anyone in a fantasy fight, but his overall skills / technique were below par........ I have also been critical about "Overrating" Jack Dempsey too, but in this here match-up, I suppose I gotta go with the "Manassa Mauler" by 7th round KO!!! Ol' Baer was just too flawed and often lost interest and determination if he couldn't get his man out of there within 5 or 6 rds.......

Baer's power was impressive. Recently I viewed his 3rd round KO of Tom Heenan, a tough customer, and Dempsey was the referee there. Dempsey messed up the count.

Isn't there some film of Baer fighting Dempsey in a boxing exhibition? I could be mistaken.

    Peter -bigger man
Chagaev - better boxer, big puncher at a lower level
Rahman - past it but a bigger puncher than Baer
Brewster - Past prime but certainly a banger who was stronger and had power than Baer
McCline - mountain of a man who could bang

I wouldn't say any of them were bigger punchers than Baer and don't forget that Peter/Brewster had Wladimir in real trouble. Chagaev is not much of a puncher. Rahman didn't punch, so it shouldn't count.

McCline had impressive power and size but he rarely used it to full advantage. Don't think he landed a single big punch on Wladimir.

Peter, Chagaev, Rahman, Brewster, and McCline are not in Baer's class and Baer is not in Dempsey's class...in my opinion, of course.

Off topic but........... Jameel McCline had a great build / physique at 6' 6" tall and 265 solid pounds of humanity when in-shape......... No **** there....... BUT!! The sum ***** never once had the mental make-up to be the Ring General or Main Man at heavyweight that his physical build suggested......... KILLER INSTICT and a sense of URGENCY to get the job done always eluded this guy........ YES! Jameel McCline had talent / skills, but was also flawed in a couple of key places..........

He floored a lot of people early but couldn't capitalize on it. Byrd and Peter were known for their durability and McCline had both down in the early rounds. Peter seemed to be all but finished off after those uppercuts yet McCline went onto lose the decision.

The mere 23 KO's he scored in 52 professional fights in no way accurately describe his punching ability.

Dempsey had a tendency to get nailed with right hands. Wild right hands from Firpo, fast and sneaky right hands from Carpentier and Tunney. So, taking that, and Baer's tremendous right hand power, Max has a punchers chance. A fairly good one, as far as they go. Outside of that, Dempsey is better than Baer at everything. He is leagues more skilled both offensively and defensively. He's also more consistent throughout fights. Baer tended to fight in bursts. He'd come alive, flail away and then just go into auto-pilot until he decided to start windmilling again. Dempsey was always doing good work in there and he could fight more than one way. Dempsey would probably get stung, maybe dropped, he might even think he got knocked out after himself TKOing Baer in the 6th round.

Both were big puncher but I think Jack was more of a two-fisted banger and had the edge in Killer instinct on a consistant basis. Baer may rock his boat but Jack was mean as a junk-yard dog and came back with a vengence. I like Dempsey by a KO somewhere before the 10th

    This.

Actually I think this fight is close to 50/50. If Firpo´s right hands could put Dempsey in trouble than Baer´s could do the same and far easier. Baer is better than Firpo and not just slightly. Dempsey was the better technician and had the better defence. Baer on the other hand had a great chin.

To go against the lot I pick Baer by 5th round KO. :good

As if who would be the best boxers he could take? I think he would beat Fitz, Willard, (Dempsey), Patterson, Wlad. And he beat Carnera and Schmeling. I also think he has a good chance against Frazier.

Baer has the chance of someone with a great chin and a great punch. That's all I see. Dempsey has nearly every advantage. Not as big a one-punch power but combination-wise I don't see Baer being near him.

Baer had a dreadfully underrated left hook, as he showed against Louis and in the Levinski exhibition (where Maxie also showed some defensive elusiveness, slipping the Kingfish's sucker punches). He also demonstrated a good hard jab in late exchanges with Schmeling. But when the going got tough, Dempsey could be lethal where the front running Baer tended to lose his confidence. Uzcudun took Maxie's Sunday punch (freaking Baer out), then cheated his way to winning the favour of referee and sole judge Dempsey. ("Paulino did a better job of fouling than you did, Max!")

Assuming both encountered turbulence from the other, Jack was simply better equipped to recover psychologically. He had the edge in hand and foot speed, and his punches were shorter. He'd get inside Max's long arms and looping shots, and decimate him in close.

Jack took 16 rounds worth of tattooing from Tunney, then exploded from nowhere to knock Gene on his rump long after a huge majority of greats would have quit. He never would have given up. Baer would crack first.
