The sheer physicality of Johnson would have been too much for Calzaghe, as it would be in another thread, for Hagler. Johnsn would have done things like squeezed Calzaghe's biceps in clinches, besides just muscling him around the ring and roughing him up in addition to just plain hitting him. It would have taken it's toll by the 12th round at least.
I was contributing to the thread in general and not taking a pop at you. :thumbsup Of the fights you've listed, you don't rate his fight against Kessler? IMO that is his greatest win.
Hi. The above post is very inaccurate. In the build up to the fight, all the talk of the boxing fans was how Kessler had the jab but that Calzaghe had the advantage on the inside. In the fight it transpired that Calzaghe's jab was vastly superior and it was infact Kessler who held the advantages on the inside. The case can be made that Calzaghe win as lesser fighters lasted with Johnson and if Calzaghe lasts, his volume basically guarentees a win. You can also argue as Calzaghe lost round to sneaky fighters such as Hopkins, Bika and Reid that Johnson would be too game for him with right hands and inside tricks. Personally I would go with Calzaghe as those fights against Hopkins and Bika, he basically took every round where he fought with his brain switched on. Against a man the size of Johnson, Calzaghe will be switched on and not engage in a macho battle. Unless you feel Johnson can walk through Calzaghe's punches, without batting an eyelid, Calzaghe wins. This is an assumption I assume you are all making and as a result of what I assume is a ridiculous assumption I will not be debating this further with anyone. Deaf ears.
I am a big fan of Joe Calzage but Johnson was too big, strong and not slow....To watch the Ketchel fight you can see Johnson's power when he wanted to explode, granted Calzage is bigger, faster and better movement then Ketchel but this is not an ordinary Heavyweight like John Ruiz...Johnson was the best of his day
Please, no more talk of grown men squeezing one another. And I put a 10 round limit on this one. I am sure Calzaghe could pull of 6 rounds better than O'Brien did. Ten is probably asking too much. But it makes one wonder if Calzaghe, with his great recuperative powers and fairly level head, could outdo Conn's performance versus Joe Louis.
Why are you so sure Calzaghe will perform better against Johnson than OBrien did? Do you think it is a given that Calzaghe beats O Brien?
I rate it ,excellent win I think his defining performance was probably over Lacy, though his style played into Joe's strengths, imo. You are entitled to differ with me, and anyone else here, no umbrage was taken.
Johnson would be way too strong, he would manhandle Calzaghe. Calzaghe was clever, but Johnson just as, if not more so. Calzaghe would try to buzz around Johnson (he wouldn't be stupid enough to stand in front of JJ), but he wouldn't be able to keep away for long, and anyway Johnson would be JC's master at range also. This is a no-brainer for me - JJ by knockout.
Jack schools Joe badly, and knocks him out after 10 rounds of 1 sided action. Joe's slap punches would do nothing to fade Jack, he would walk through them smiling, and play with Joe like a child.
Hey, no homo...read this: Dirty fighting? Legendsby TOAO FN (U14376673) 16 February 2011 This content is protected Dempsey said he best combo was a left below followed by a left to the head, the way he knocked out Sharkey, Marciano always punched after the bell. This content is protected and hit him with slashing punches. Henry Armstrong would miss a left hook on purpose to follow with his elbow! Zivic used the laces on his gloves to open cuts, gauged eyes with his gloves, butted and used his hand to steady their head before a knockout punch. Greb - one of the greatest used all these techniques and more...he even bit a chunk out of someones shoulder way before the Tyson Holyfield fight. The only guy I see using these techniques now is Andre Ward. He is well schooled here...no doubt. Is it underused or could they not get away with it today?
