Havent watch too much of Johnson, but i know for a fact VK is overrated. Especially his so called granite chin. The only 2 fighters he fought he could punch were Sanders (Who had him all over the place in the first round) and Lewis, who gave VK a PIZZAFACE

    Agreed.

I could see Vitali putting up a decent fight and giving a prime Johnson more than a couple of dangerous moments but nothing more. Johnson was too crafty and skilled for Vitali and he wins a convincing decision if Vitali doesn't quit out of frustration. Vitali's long slow jab might hinder him in this fight. Johnson would counter on top and underneath all night long.

Even into his 40's, Johnson was still whipping the best prospects of all sizes at Stillmans.

Boxing has change much since the legend that was Jack Johnson laced them up.

For the sake of the question, a prime Jack vs a prime Vitali, I see Vitali just about dominating.

UNLESS this happened to be a 25 round fight, Johnson may pull out something crazy after 12, or 15 rounds, and possibly score a ko, but then again if Vitali knew he was going into a 25 round fight, he would be more prepared. But that point alone makes it hard to call this fantasy match up without any bias, or bull****.

Either way, Vitali UD Johnson. Johnson never fought anything like Vitali, and in todays standards, Johnson was VERY sloppy, and lacked alot of defensive techniques that are commonplace today.

All you picking Johnson must be a bit crazy or something.

It would be a hilarious/sad mismatch.

agree that vitlay is a roider. have any of you guys seen footage of when he was in kickboxing? dude is a straight cruiserweight at 22 years old, built like chad dawson... and look at what he's like now...incredibly suspicious

Jack Johnson was a straightup 185 pounds at 23. Where did he get the Winstrol?

I was 170 at 21 and 195 at 30 with 8% body fat. I trained on beer and pretzels, not roids.

Different bodies develop at different paces. This proves nothing.

Probably genetics. My weight at 22 was about 154-160lbs. At 28 it's 200-205 and I'm not fat (not ripped but still not fat), and I haven't worked out all that time. Certain body type just gains a lot of weight in middle-late 20's, kind of natural "manning up".

:lol: you idiots.....i always thought that the classic was filled by a bunch of lunatics so called boxing experts with a crazy hard-on for old time fighters, and have a very hard time recognizing the fact that boxing have evolved allot since the days of Johnson's, Dempsey's or Louis's.

Willard won't even be qualified to carry Vitali's jockstrap..and the comparisons btw them are totally pointless as there's nothing similar in them except for maybe height and durability.
Vitali would make Jack Johnson cry.

I love the great situational logic here... Boo-hoo... he was too old against Willard (though he was what, 3 years older than old Jess?) And the great contradistinction that follows from the other side of the apologists mouth... He was still worthy of contender status in his 40's.

Vitali is actually both taller and heavier than Willard was. And he is ripped.

    Now skill-wise... Come on, folks...
Willard was a farmer who picked up boxing at 27 years of age.
Not to mention how visible it is HOW MUCH boxing technique evolved for those 100 years.
And Johnson lost to that guy.
    Vitali would toy with both.

    It's silly, really.

Look at Ketchel's (a middleweight) knockdown punch. That's almost literally some Charlie Zelenoff's ****. Any class boxer of today catched with something like that would be totally ridiculed.

    YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME.

Stanley did have that kind of power, but it's pretty much admitted that that down was staged to raise the film's monetary value.

EDIT: About Willard johnson- imagine if vitali had been as inactive as johnson, and instead of a 12 rounder in germany he had to fight under a hot cuban summer sun in tropical heat at his current age... Would he be able to go 40? or even past 15? The funny thing is that Johnson would have still won if it was a 12 rounder!

If you watch it in slow motion , Johnson appears to be beginning to fall before he is hit.
Or if you like , "catched" with a punch.

It's not that much about power but about how TELEGRAPHED this shot was. It goes to show something about the skill level of boxers back then.

    What do you mean inactive?
Vitali came back from a very long lay off in great shape and at exactly the age Johnson fought Willard.
Knowing it would be an x-rounder, he would surely prepare accordingly.
But I don't believe it would be necessary.

Man, you're a very respected poster here but saying that he would lose in a 12 rounder is just silly.
