Jack Johnson was a phenomenon for the times that he lived in. The best heavy champ prior to Joe Louis. I can't see him beating the more modern day swarmers like Frazier and Tyson though. Marciano even.

The fact that Johnson was a super middleweight himself, when he was kod gets conveniently forgotten by his ," hater in chief."
Eye twinkling will be fine, please do not descend to the depths of Mendacity.
We are up to the limit with our moron quota allready.

I was of course, using it as a noun,ie Mendacity/Mendoza.

Great film, somewhat diluted because US audiences were deemed not ready to accept a suppressed homosexual [Brick],so they made him an alcoholic.
The idea that any straight man would need persuading to climb into bed with the lovely ,and sadly, late Liz Taylor is of course preposterous.
Fortunately, the film has the benefit of the terrific Burl Ives as " Big Daddy ". he gives a performance on a par with that he gave in "The Big Country" as " Pa Hennessy".:good

  10. i can“t see jonhson winning against joe frazier. maybe tyson because he was weak mentally and he did not have the stamina. jonhson could handle the 185 pounds of marciano much better than 205-210 pounds of joe frazier who had good stamina as rocky and he was very strong mentally. jonhson would beat patterson for sure. if james smith could frustrate the attacks of tyson with the clinch then jonhson would do it better

It really stretches the term "suspension of disbelief"...

Anyone ever get an accurate weight of Johnson in the Choynski fight?

Sorry Seamus,I am going by the two weights Box rec gives, ie 10 months before he fought Choynski, Johnson scaled 168lbs against Jack McCormack, and , 20 months after fighting Choynski, he is reported to weigh 185lbs against Jack Gardner,so it seems logical to me to assume he was in between those two extremes, for Choynski.
A month after beating Johnson, Choynski weighed 169lbs for a fight which seems to be a fairly constant figure.

Johnsons style of fighting was effective and he WAS a great fighter. In my book nobody beats him easy and likewise he wont beat ALL of the greatest swarmer types since It is never clear cut when genuinely great fighters meet.

His approach was pretty negative, but jack was adaptable and could do everything well. The whole thing would work now but it could never develop now because fans don’t want to watch that type of thing and the rules don’t entirely tolerate it anyway. How many points would he get taken off before he stands and fights? Johnson wont have all the rounds he would need to tire out somebody like Frazier. the thing is Johnson was great enough at his best to fight on even terms with the best.
