Agree 100% except I think Sharkey boxes the ears off Baer, one of the most underrated v one of the most overrated.
Baer has one of the least impressive records of any world HW champion, after the excellent Schmeling victory whats his next most impressive win, Carnera I suppose... and then? I honestly think Benny Hill could go 8 rounds with Max(for British and Irish forum members!).
Baer would knock Sharkey's block off. An old Dempsey and Primo Carnera could do the trick, I guess the murderous punching Baer could as well.Remember, this is the best version of Baer, and not the stumblebum version that you so foolishly subscribe to.
So Baer is excused any amount of rubbish fights except one or two but Sharkey isn't? Old Dempsey was 32 and the Gob also boxed the ears off Carnera. Baer had one great win over a guy that was losing to Hamas and drawing with a faded Uzcuden around that time. Of course there is a chance that Baer could catch Sharkey but the facts make it unlikely. He couldn't dispatch Loughran or Schaaf or Hamas or Braddock so I don't buy into this two fight peak Baer as a fantastic finisher, think McCall, Sanders, Rachman, Brewster and you have Baer, Bah Humbug.
Both fighters had a good set of whiskers, so I see this going the distance. Baer, for all his vaunted power, was so awkward, straight-up and never really learned how to throw a correct punch. He was so prone to throwing back-hands throughout his career but he could hit like a mule. It saved him a number of times. I believe Schmeling was ahead on points before Maxie finally caught him in the 10th and I know Ernie Schaff was ahead until knocked cold in the waning seconds of the 10th. I see Sharkey utilizing his very potent left jab and his high work rate to outpoint Maxie over 15.
Even though Curtis Sheppard a parring partner for Louis and Baer said Louis hit very hard but Baer could kill you by mistake? you think that prime Baer was too akward to land his right, he just needs one to land and has 45 minutes to do so...
