tbh haye hasn't exactly been full of praise for degale. and he went and signed the guy who beat him in the aba's. then said he wasn't interested in signing degale up. what do u expect degale to do. be all nice as pie. :nono
I don't dislike him, but being a cocky Londoner is not going to impress most people. To be honest he's won an Olympic gold medal so he's got every right to be confident in his ability - whether he has it as a pro is another matter, then there's the Fraudley factor that's going to stop people wanting to build him up only to be knocked down. Think its harsh though to slate him for how he won his pro debut given how far apart the pro and amateur games are apart. What he needs to do is learn the game, show improvement and find a style that suits him. When Lennox Lewis started I seem to remember he looked amateurish at times and sloppy and he turned out alright. If Degale can do a quarter of what he did with a quarter of his class he'll win most people over.
Hatton is a man of the people and people like his relentless style. Degale comes off as a smug pitty pat puncher. You can make comparisons with a young Cassius Clay but he had a likeability which DeGale lacks.
Here's his debut fight. I have to say, there is no pop in his punches. If he wants to have a shout at world level, he needs to find some power. He also holds his right hand too low I reckon. [YT]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7eiErpJUCk&feature=related[/YT]
I'd love for him to succeed. He's a bit of a twat but he's still a British boxer and I want him to do well. The only thing is I don't think he will.
People hate him primarily because he has landed a big money contract whilst most are struggling in the midst of a recession. He hasn't helped himself with some stupid comments but all he's really done is fire back at some rather harsh and jealous comments directed towards him by Haye, Calzaghe and Eubank.
