I want to agree with this. It depends on the judges though. Calzaghe seemed of get a lot of rounds based on ineffective aggression. We saw that vs Hopkins. Judges gave him rounds for those sloppy slaps. Same could happen is a mytical match up with Toney. Even worse due to Toney sometimes having a tendency to plant himself and slip punches for too much of a round.

The best way to measure it is

Toney at 44-0 vs Calzaghe at 44-0

Who wins at super middle ?

if montell griffin and drake thadzi can beat Toney then Calzaghe shouldnt have too much problems

He was a pretty decent middleweight with some sound defensive skills but he was no Mayweather. who did he really beat at 168?

Battle worn Barkley and Tony Thornton?

Toney is severely over rated. Calzaghe in a 8-4 / 9-3 type decision. his speed is just too much for Toney

Toney moved straight up to LHW after his loss to jones only to lose to montell griffin twice and drake thadzi.

Toney moved up in 94, Calzaghe won his world title in 97.

Calzaghe didnt make the jump to 175 until 2008 vs Hopkins and at that point Toney had been a Heavyweight for 5 years

Can you imagine Calzaghe stepping into the ring with Holyfield? Yeah, me neither.

I'm torn on this one, if it were a trilogy I'd favor Toney

A year and a half after Holyfield (who before the fight was on a losing streak losing to Byrd, went 1-1-1 with Ruiz and lost to Lewis after somehow robbing him off a win in the first fight with it being classed a draw) Toney tested positive for a banned substance against . . . . well none other than John Ruiz. the fight was changed to a NC.

so after drawing with Rahman and losing twice to Samuel Peter Toney rematches Rahman (originally ruled a TKO) and tests positive again for a banned substance

Joe was never going to be a heavyweight, Toney on the other hand got fat. Could you imagine what would have happened if Toney had fought Lennox Lewis? no doubt in my mind he would have been knocked out cold.

but then again i forgot its ok to dope up if your american

At his best, Toney was a wrecking machine. Toney by TKO.

Toney at his best at super middle would win. Calzaghe is open to the right hand and Toney probably has the best right hand counter of his generation. Calzaghe's work rate would also see him just countered more, simply trying to overwhelm Toney with work rate won't work as shown by the Jirov fight, Toney eats fighters alive when they come to him.

But Calzaghe would be competitive. He may struggle early and get countered and he would be forced to adapt. He would eventually switch tactics and box and move which is when Toney has tended to struggle. But Calzaghe would lose too many early rounds to get the decision and KOing Toney is just not possible.

But if Toney shows up in poor shape which was always possible, his lack of self discipline could easily see him gas and lose a clear decision. The light heavyweight Toney was mentally shot at that point. Calzaghe beats this version of Toney.

Toney destroys him. This fight won't happen though because Calzaghe is air-sick. If Toney decides to take the flight, Calzaghe still won't be able to perform due to injured knuckles but will have no problems fighting Pudwell and Kebabi Salem.

I always thought of Calzaghe as a poor man Jirov.
Toney is a terrible match up for him. Hed get countered all night.

    this is actually very true.

joe pretends to sign for someone big, to excite his fans, and then opts for pudwill kebab in the end. and then does that trick again. and again. and suddenly joes in his midthirties and wants to retire.

10 years on, his diehard fans still haven't realised they been cheated. give em 20 years, by 2025 they might cotton on.
