One could certainly argue that Toney will go down as the more important fighter. However, styles make fights. Calzaghe had the style that bothered Toney; he fought three minutes a round with high output and shifting feet. This is one where the lesser fighter wins.
This is very true, and I think Calzaghe would cause Toney problems with his speed, work rate, and constantly changing angles.. But I think Toney would have more success than he did against Jones Jr, as he would not have had to respect Calzaghe's power as much as he did Roy's which I do think kept Toney a bit hesitant at times. I think you would see great moments in this fight from both Toney and Calzaghe. Styles make fights, and I find this one kind of hard to imagine the outcome with both at their best.
Great post! Toney would have had no respect for Joe's speed and power, like what he'd had for Roy's. But it's very interesting. It depends on how you view this fantasy fight, and what your criteria is. If it's a fantasy fight where both fighters are fully fit, and fighting to their full capabilities, then you have to favour Toney. But if you're asking questions such as 'what would have happened, if Toney had've fought Joe, instead of for example, Tim Littles'? then it's a different debate altogether. Because I think Toney wouldn't have had an ounce of respect for Joe, and I think it's likely that he'd have completely underestimated him. If Toney had showed up out of shape and not really motivated, just going through the motions, then Joe could definitely have capitalised on that. He could have used great work rate, and he could have out landed him and won rounds on aggression. So it's more than possible that Joe could have won. The other thing to consider, is their egos and the pre fight build up. Because Toney and his big mouth, could definitely have lured Joe into a macho tear up in the centre of the ring. If that would have happened, Toney would have had a big advantage there, motivated or not. Joe had great boxing skills, but when his bravado kicked in, he could be reckless. He'd drop his hands, and he'd trade and take shots. So there lots to consider. But again, if both fighters were at their absolute best, then it's Toney for me. :good
Calzaghe's pace and output would be an absolute nightmare for Toney. I'm not a big Calzaghe fan but he would win this by a wide margin.
It would start off as a boxing match where both guys are feeling eachother out and Toney would be trying much harder to impose himself than normal. I just don't see him getting out of first gear. Toney would land a few shots but would let himself be outpaced after 4 or 5 rounds then he just wouldn't keep up. He would start leaping in with his shots with frustration. Toney hasn't got the classic conventional style of defence so he would be very ineffective against Calzaghe. All the head moving won't stop Calzaghe landing on him.
I respect your opinion. I wish we could have seen it. The build up and the weigh in could have been as entertaining as the fight.

Wait for it. This will be good You going to duck or answer this time? ----------------------------------------------------------------------
look at the level Toney was fighting at, when SMW champ 1993 he wins the title from iran barkley a fighter who years earlier was blown away by nigel benn in 1 round and pummelled to a loss by a shot roberto duran barkley went onto lose 11 out of 25 fights following this fight and never beat anyone who was remotely good in doing so,the guy was so desperate he was even plying his trade as a HW in the late 90's against the likes of berbick and they say this era is a joke govonor chambers a guy with a career record of 9 wins 7 losses, all 3 fights prior to toney were ko losses! ricky thomas: won 11 lost 14,the 4 fights he had prior to toney all losses! glenn thomas:won 29 lost 8, lost to roy jones prior to toney and finished his career with a first round ko loss to jeff lacy. danny garcia: won 30 lost 22, was coming off losses to chris pyatt (a steve collins victim) lamar parks etc larry prather: won 19 lost 24,lost his last 5 fights prior to the toney fight even losing to nicky piper tony thornton: won 37 lost 7,lost to chris eubank a year earlier. anthony hembrick: won 31 lost 8,lost to maske prior to toney and orlin norris a year earlier. tim littles: won 27 lost 3,maybe one of his better wins, had fought mainly bums with the exception of a close UD over frankie liles, went onto lose to frankie liles in a 2nd contest following the toney fight. vinsom durham: won 21 lost 37 enough said. charles williams: won 37 lost 7 drew 3,lost to maske prior to toney. (this post was improvised from ESB great Silencer, on one of his great threads)and finally the Jones fight and, That was Jones big SMW victory where Toney was alledgedly weight weakend, other than that Jones didnt do much at SMW. Then go to LHW and see that Toney lost to a novice Griffin and Thadzi Anyone thinks Toney at SMW or LHW is above Calzaghe cant explain themselves
