He showed no obvious signs of it, and used plenty of head movement without any apparent discomfort. I'm not saying he didn't have a neck injury or that he didn't almost cancel the fight...but by the time they got in the ring he was fine to compete. (whether there was some stiffness left over we can't know - but he certainly wasn't moving his head like someone with a grave license-revoking neck injury) There is no need to make excuses. :yep He did win after all.
You think this guy will have a chance to compete at world level (if he is good enough), or do you think will he end up like Golovkin?
Pirog's only recognition comes from a knockout of a green 23 year old kid. Danny Jacobs was\is a prospect, not a contender. That being said I'm sure Maciel could compete with and beat some recognizable names at middleweight or junior middleweight. But the only name on his resume I recognize is Francisco Antonio Mora. All of the other wins are over Argentine goofballs. I would love to see Javier Maciel vs. Michael "Richie Rich" Oliveira, the kid who recently won on Showtime.
haha Mike is the homie. Real good dude. Hope he continues to grow. He was actually a student of mine in a class(he goes to FIU).
Fortunately or unfortunately, his defensive strategy of blocking punches with his face makes for great TV.
I rate him very well at 154 lbs and think he could scoop up a belt as long as he doesn't go after Cotto. (who can do all the same thing he does well, but better). Light middleweight is actually pretty weak outside the very top handful. I wouldn't favor him against Cotto, Molina, Lara, Canelo, or maybe Kirkland and Trout...but he could damn sure lift that IBF strap off K9 Bundrage. (or the Spinks vs. Powell eliminator winner, should they exact vengeance on K9 by then). In terms of non-title - Javier Maciel vs. Delvin Rodriguez would be amazing, and not a mismatch.
He's one of those guys who really demonstrates how much difference the short jump between divisions can make. He is so much better at 154 than at 160. Stronger, sharper, more confident...just better all-around. He'd have never won a title if he stayed at middleweight. At LMW he has a very good chance if he maneuvers himself into the right opportunity. That would be very cool. :thumbsup Good chance for both to show what they're made of.
He is a student at FIU. I was teaching bilogy there. He is a good kid. Hard working and loves boxing. He is only 21 and is continuing to grow.
Maciel is a good fighter. My impression is that he was more concerned with surviving 12 rounds against Pirog than winning, but that's no shame, considering it was Maciel's first bout on the world stage. My guess is that Maciel actually matured -- gained character depth -- as a result of going 12 with the champ.
If it's true that Pirog had a neck injury, and that his head movement was thus compromised, that would explain his lacklustre peformance against Maciel. Remember, Dmitiri's style is VERY dependent on his uncanny ability to heep his head moving in all directions: by avoiding punches with impunity in this way, he enables himself to take the offensive, and to score from different angles. Assuming the neck injury stuff is true, then Pirog would have been compeled to compensate defensively (for his lack of head movement) by keeping his distance, playing it safe, and using his superior handwork to outbox Maciel. Such an approach would have taken the edge off of Pirog's offensive. I thought Pirog won about 9 or 10 rounds easily that night, but looked kind of like a dud otherwise. Very untypical performance for Pirog.
Just noticed Maciel has scored 4 opening round T/KO's since the loss to Pirog, the most recent was a vicious body shot against Carlos Wilfredo Vilches
Maciel is raking up those first round KO wins. 10 of his 24 bouts have ended in the first round. He has power. :bbb
