Agree that he's underrated in as much as you don't see much discussion of him. Dominated a division that had some tough contenders for a longer period of time than almost anyone from another era would have. Also fun guy to watch fight.
I am not sure how, in retrospect the Sandoval fight reveals anything about Joltin' Jeff??? it appears to be true that he had been diagnosed with cataracts prior to the fight and warned not fight again...but Jeff as many boxers before him did not quite know when to listen to the docs or good advice. I am not positive as to his claims about injuring his shoulder in the week leading to up the fight, or about the supposed injection he recieved into said should an hour prior to the fight. His claims are that by the 3rd round on he had little feeling in the sghoulder and arm...Good excuses perhaps, but since he did in fact decide never to fight again due to eye damage I have to assume a least a little bit of truth into thos claims...Oh well for my money, Jeff would have dazzled pintor to a wide UD...but we will never know. I do agree that it was a major legacy fight that both could use on their resumes.
I will leave the drug stuff alone, for someone else to confirm or deny. Jeff was offered his largest payday (To my knowledge) to fight Muniz...But the offer was made only one week in advance. Jeff took the offer, unable to turn down such a pay day and from his camps reports he only speant one full day in the gym in order to prepare for Muniz. Along with Jeff I think he gave a decent performance in that light? (I scored a draw)...anyway Jeff garunteed Muniz a title shot based upon his performance he felt that oscar deserved it. Jeff went and made his already agreed upon defense against Murata and then trained to fight Oscar for the title...this time Jeff left no doubt as to who the winner was!
I know most will point to my PHILLY bias, and I am cool with that...For my money I will put Joltin' Jeff H2H with any bantam ever and feel comfortabe with the outcome! Without my bias here is a cool article! http://www.phillyboxinghistory.com/fight_stories/stories/2010/20101129_chandler_hissner_01.htm and a decent interview: http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/0001-hanley.html
Chandler was interviewed by one of the mags in the mid 80's and what stoo out was how he seemed bitter about not getting the recognition he felt he deserved. He referred in qhat read as a sarcastical tone, to "your great Carlos Zarate" and their comparitive number of defences
I thought Chandler was a pretty good fighter, but I was ecstatic that a guy from my neighborhood beat him up.
I think some of that bitterness has softened with age. I do believe that he did not feel that he got his due, and regretted not getting the opportunity to get some of the bigger fights that could have helped his resume. Most notably I think the Pintor fight stuck in his gut. He has also mentioned that the z boys were 2 other fights he wanted that never panned out (I am not familiar with these specifics). He also claims that Wilfredo Gomez was scared to fight him...Jeff has a story about this in the above interview link, but I only know his side of the story.
anyone wants to see the perfect example of how to lift a title should watch the Sandoval fite, one of the top surprises ever. IMO Jeff looked kind of shot. The punishment he took in his last few fights, especially from Canizalez, had something to do with it
While I don't necesarily agree with your sentiments on Canizales and the others leading towards chandler's decline as much as I believe it was health related.... Jeff always spoke fondly of Gaby, and said that he was the only guy ever to hurt him. he said that Gaby took him to places that no other boxer ever had, and that the body shots he threw were relentless. Once he was retired he said that he would consider coming back only for a fight with Gaby. Jeff gave him credit like he did with no other opponent.
I did a thread and a poll on here a few years ago in regards to Pintor/Chandler and Chandler won by a landslide....Would Pintor actually be your pick and if so how do you envision it going down?
Still amazing to me that he defended against a guy he went to high school with, Johnny"Dancing Machine"Carter.
