It's absolutely the point. There is a lot less exertion required when facing relatively inferior, less athletic foes. It's roughly analogous to the effort required to beat an old codger in a 10K or beat Cheptegei in a 5K. Also, those old timers paced themselves for 20 or 25 rounds. The output and level of pursuit was very governed. If someone like a Fitz or Goddard, real bangers, got a foe in trouble, they jumped on them. Otherwise, it was a slow paced affair.
Yes, and that quote and locale is also referenced in this article (below), written by Finis Farr in 1964, quote contained in 3rd last paragraph. The article altogether is an excellent read. https://www.americanheritage.com/jeff-its-you Here’s another article (below), written as at the time, published 11 July 1910, containing an alternate post fight opinion expressed by Jeffries stating he “might’ve” beaten Johnson some 6 years prior. The article also claims to be the first interview with Jeffries since the fight. Also, if you’re interested, you can check out some other articles on that same site - excellent source material. But they fought twice, and, despite being availed of no less than 45 rounds, Jeffries was unable to secure a KO over Sharkey. Fitz turned the trick twice, requiring less than a total of 10 rounds to do so - of course, that is duly ignoring the fraudulent DQ ruling against Fitz by Wyatt Twerp in the first fight.
In a time machine Holyfield does not have PED expert Lee Haney on his side and that means he is 195 pounds max. Holyfield was never a conditioning monster, he huffed and puffed until he got his second win. Even PED enhanced to the max Holyfield was never a big puncher and never had fight ending power . He stopped a morbid obese paycheck only Douglas…..got a late standing TKO vs a totally washed up post prison Tyson after throwing the entire kitchen sink at him and needed two tries vs Glass cannon Moorer who was stopped in his very next fight by a old Fossil with one shot. So non PED Holyfield at Heavyweight is close to a feather duster as far as punching is concerned. This is a way more competitive fight assuming it happens early last century with Jeffries as the top dog as you envision. Holyfield does not like it to the body and Jeffries was a savage body puncher . However, the fight would never happen because at the time the Champ did not fight black contenders.
You'd actually have a point if Jeff was some elite boxer with far superior speed, technique, skill, and defense compared to Tom, Fitz, Corbett, etc. He was relatively on par with or inferior to them in terms of overall ability and stats outside of his size and insane durability. So no, Jeff definitely exerted himself and had to make plenty of effort to go 20+ rounds because again: he wasn't vastly superior to his opposition. Your argument about pace simply doesn't fall in line with reality in all cases. The Tom Sharkey fights were incredibly brutal, high paced blood baths where both fighters suffered busted lips, noses, cracked ribs, hand injuries, etc, all for a combined 45 grueling rounds. They weren't in there just dancing on their toes throwing light jabs and pitter patter flurries and they blocked with their face. No matter how you try to spin things, Jeff's stamina is very impressive.
What was the average number of punches Jeffreis threw per round ?? He wasn´t a mover , right ? Could he move around behind a good jab ? Not his style, right ? If it is less than Holyfield in workrate and he is there to be find, unless he is a precise counter-puncher (which I don´t think he was, right ?) how can he win more rounds here ? Holyfield would smother him with activity, and his power which was good, was not the biggest among what Holyfield faced.
The gap in skills would be too great Holy is leagues above Jim, not sure if Evander hits hard enough to stop Jim but a very easy one sided decision he might score a knockdown with a headbutt

The fans. Jeffries fans in particular. Because they'll get to carry Jeff out of the ring. On their shoulders as he is celebrating. Celebrating because he survived this match. Survived to get a decision that is. The decision to never step foot in the ring with Evander again. Because once was all he needed. To realize how overmatched he was.
