Jerry Quarry Vs David Tua - 15 Rounds??

It's not just how Frazier through it constantly faster he also rechambered it and fired it again and again faster than anyone else I ever saw

 

Tua truly was a man born outside his time.

Apparently he was born in the only era, where he didn't have an obvious path to greatness!

 

Quarry, but it would be one of the hardest fights of his career.

 

Every tua MM is just like "he either loses a decision or bails himself out late with a KO"

 

Not Quarry. That's for sure.

 

Maybe, on the other hand he might beat the hell out of Tua. David took a good punch but getting peppered tends to diminish a fighters offense. Not wanting to let his hands go because he's getting countered.

 

Remember what Jerry Quarry did to a Monsterous puncher in Earnie Shavers on Dec 14 1973, KO 1. Quarry has beaten the likes of Thad Spencer, Mac Foster and was trading with 5 state champion Joe Frazier on June 23 1969 until Joe ended it. In his prime years Quarry was pretty capable, the only upset Quarry suffered was his KO loss to George Chuvalo in Dec 1969.

 

That's a very good point, and it could happen in this bout. Never thought about it in those terms.

 

I have never bought into the argument, that Quarry would have been a champion, had he only fought in the 30s or the 50s.

However we have to look at some important statistics here.

Quarry had a ridiculous number of fights, against ranked opposition, that puts a lot of champions in the shade.

Yes he lost a lot of those fights, but he also banked a lot of wins.

Now when Tua took on a man ranked in the top ten, there would be high hopes for him, but he would always get the L on Boxrec.

I am not entirely certain, that Tua is worth to clean Quarry's spit bucket!

 

You make good points but if I may add something to your comment, Tua got a gift vs Rahman with the stoppage and the draw, and was also way behind on points vs Maskaev, Oquendo, which shows two things. One Tua does have late KO power, but also can be outboxed for large periods in a fight. That's why this match up you can't fully predict either way.

 

Quarry could box him, but I think Quarry is a guy tailor made for Tua in a lot of ways, often he liked to fight a bit more than was necessary. Quarry also was small for Tua's era, wasn't equipped with crazy stopping power and with the amount of exchanges/activity from JQ, I just see Tua catching him bad and getting a KO. A UD for Quarry isn't inconceivable to me, but I don't see it in all likelihood. I think this is a perfect match for Tua within the career he laid out and would yield a very impressive KO.
