If you think that Chuvalo or Peralta were better than anybody Jeffries beat, then you definitely have a strong bias in favour of one era!

Or you see the sport of boxing as having progressed just as every other sport has been considered to have progressed. Peralta also has over 100fights including a win over Pastrano and draws with Bonavena and Lyle.

I would argue they are better Heavyweights, in a head to head sense, than anyone Jeffries beat.

The crux of the dispute here is rewarding contemporary credentials over what we perceive to be head to head abilities. As we no longer see the likes of a Sharkey or Fitzsimmons doing anything in the division, some of us assume their respective molds are anachronistic at best.

I'd like to know where you guys are even getting all these assessments of guys like Gus Ruhlin, Tom Sharkey and Bob Fitzsimmons from, considering the complete lack of reasonable viewable film available ...

... even down to disagreements on their body %.

    Bullshitters. :patsch

It would mean a hell of a lot more to me if he had taken up the challenges of Sam McVey and Jack Johnson, both or whom beat not only Martin but Ferguson too.

Johnson would have been a fine scalp, but would a win over an extremely green Sam McVea realy be a major deal changer in terms of hsi resume?

I guess you could argue that no fighter before a certain time could have any merit of any sort.

Thankfully, I am literate, so I can read contemporary reports and assess.

Certainly not in a historical respect. That is why I love the history of boxing. And really not even below the heavyweight ranks, the one, unique division that has grown in size over the years. Every other division has remained essentially the same with a rigid ceiling (say what you will about date of weigh-in or supplementation).. I think Joe Gans would be a helluva lot more successful today than Jim Jeffries.

He would certainly have been a more impressive scalp than Jack Munroe, and significantly more financially remunerative.

After losing to Foreman in Feb 1970, Peralta was still ranked in March 1971,WBC had him at no8,BI at not 7, the WBA at no 8. Chuvalo was no 5 with the WBC, no 6 with B I , and no 7 with the WBA.

There is still no way I see james beating george.

He doesn't fight like ali and young and only they beat a prime george.

He doesn't hit hard enough to knock george out.

He wasn't particularly hard to hit. He'll basically get walked down.
