Am I correct in guessing that this conclusion is based off of only two Ellis fights?: 1) Martin, and of course 2) Bonavena?
But did Bonavena go 15 with Jimmy, he did. Jimmy Ellis was good but he could not take a punch from the heavier hitters like Frazier.
Ellis-Bonavena went 12, but I agree with you. Ellis lost by knockout to the two heaviest hitters he ever faced (excluding Lyle-of course, that depends on one's opinion). I was actually saying that I thought Ellis did not hit as hard as Machen.
I do not think that Ellis would have lasted 12 rounds with prime Liston like Eddie Machen did in 1960.
I'm inclined to agree as well as Ellis did not always know what plan best suited who he was fighting. Machen almost always knew what to do, even if he lost. Ellis seemed a bit to eager to engage in exchanges, which would be something that would fast take its toll in a fight with Liston. This might be a carbon copy of the Shavers-Ellis fight, huh?
