I'm one of those freaks who just love to watch the defensive master survivors at work..Locche, Whitaker,...Jimmy Young...Young's masterpiece vs Foreman is a treat for me..akin to watching Joey Giardello frustrate a slugger...Young would have done his thing vs Conteh...as great as John was..as though it were just another day at the office. Young wins a stupifyingly easy decision over Conteh...neutralizing and frustrating him over the distance.
That's right..THE Jimmy Young disappeared into thin air after the heist of his fight with Norton. Can't expect a man to fight the opponent and the three judges.
Conteh could have won a decision around that time Young was over in Britain fighting, when both were young prospects fighting some of the same foes, but not when Young fills out and hits his stride. I don't put Young anywhere near the class of Locche, Whitaker Benitez and other excellent defensivively gifted stylists like Zapata, Starling, kalambay etc. though imo he didn't have that kind of textbook boxing ability or inventive flair. He was more in line with Serrano, Corro, Pender, guys like that, albeit definitely a hard man to hit for a heavyweight.
I wouldn't liken Young to Locche or Pep, but I would also not group him in with the latter guys that you mentioned..all of them were more stiff ..less loose than Young.
In reality he did not lose to Ali,Norton, and he actually got the wins over Foreman,Lyle and he frustrated them all....He did not have the tricky legs and powerful hands like Walcott but Jimmy had a very tight defense, hip movement and quick hands and punched in bursts....not too many skilled like him in the heavyweight division, I said Sweat Pea before and that is not accurate but if you look at the division its relative ...Young's style trouble in any era
I definatly would put Young as good or better than ANYBODY defensively. So many tricks to avoid punces, first by just majicly being out of harms way as opponent throughs, if in range, subtle head movement or bending at the waist, either going down real low, or real back, blocking, just so much going on with him. Most of it so subtle, that a non Young fan wouldn't think he avouded, but just his opponent wasted a punch. Now, Conte, I really liked him, class guy, nice technichin, at first, I thought he might outhustle Jimmy, but then I thought, he wasn't really all that busy. Young would take a master boxer, and give him an even higher education in boxing, and a guy like Conte would learn from that. The guys that could win a decision from Jimmy, not actually beat him, but have the judges give them the decision are guys that would be busy, don't have to actually land punches, just throw them. Poor Jimmy, doing his thing, figuring I made him miss 98% of his punches, and I know I countered wisely, and more than enough, gets ****ed again by the judges. I would definatly put Young right with Locche, (who I just found out about recently from this forum, guy was majic!) Whitiker, Starling and Benitez, all fighters I really loved, brilliant. Corro, Pender , Sarrano? No offence to them, but don't make me laugh. Not even in the same ballpark!
My Buddie was a friend and sometime sparring partner for Jimmy. He got into cocain after the Norton fight.
There comes a breaking point for a guy..when he gets screwed by unappreciative judges and the ruling elite in the sport that only want who they want to win. Young was a superb defensive master who specialized in making his opponents look like typical clumsy clodhopper heavyweights.
