I have grown to appreciate how good JMM is. There are some who says his best days are behind him...I totally disagree. JMM is still a Top-Notch Elite-Level fighter. And I think he has deserved an opportunity to fight some Elite-Level talent that will put his name back in conversation: Example...JMM vs Maidana would be spectacular. JMM vs Guzman, Humberto Soto, Katsidis, Nate Campbell, Ketonlik, Juan Urango, Anthony or Lamont Peterson would be just as spectacular. But Juan Diaz offers nothing. If JMM beats Diaz (Again) then what? This fight is only a chance for Diaz to become relevant again. Hopefully, JMM gets the winner of Malignaggi/Khan.
True. As great as the first fight was, I seriously don't see how another victory over Juan Diaz (who in my eyes seems to have deteriorated slightly) will enhance his legacy. He would have been much better off facing Khan. A victory here, would have secured him a title in a 4th weight division (?), and in my opinion would easily have made him the greatest Mexican fighter of the past decade. A Khan fight is a massive opportunity missed
Both guys could do with an impressive performance and after the first great fight, why not? Neither has a better option out there, I don't think.
As it stands now, yes options have been limited. But Marquez, if he made his mind quicker, had a range of fighters he could have picked: - Khan before he had to settle for Paulie - Valero before he flew off the handle - Katsidis before he accepted Mitchell - Maidana's still an option. What a great win that would be, one that easily winnable considering Maidana's poor defense As for Juan Diaz, I'm not quite sure. But Marquez certainly has not excuse
I don't agree with you that his best days aren't yet all behind him, but I really hope you're right. I'd love to be wrong about that. But I've felt I've observed a lot of change in him over the years. And I think the best version of Marquez, if he were fighting a Juan Diaz, no offense to Diaz, but if he were fighting a Juan Diaz type only as a Featherweight during his prime, instead of a lightweight recently, he wouldn't have had nearly the trouble he had with the pressure. That was a great first fight but it was the case of a very good former lightweight champion and a sliding great feather/super feather who was really pushing it at 135, even if he enjoys being at the weight more as an older fighter. Just an opinion, I know. And I hope I'm wrong but it looks to me like he's lost quite a bit of speed, was rendered nearly impotent at 147 by more than just the extraordinary technical skills of Floyd, as considerable as they are. And I think Beristain didn't want him in with Khan at 140 because he's just not up to it. But if I'm wrong, and you're right, good. GREAT, in fact. I'll be like one of these dudes if I'm wrong: This content is protected But unless it's just for another good pay day, I don't see a point to a second fight either. I think the first took a shitload out of Diaz that he couldn't afford in the first place.
None of those fights are really intriguing though, apart from Valero. I really like Katisidis and Maidana, but those fights aren't going to make much money. Neither would a fight with Khan, outside of Britain.
Useless fight. What would JMM gain if he defeats Diaz again? There is something that Diaz would gain from this, but for JMM? NADA! But what can you expect from GBP. This is their way of cleaning up boxing! Roy Jones vs. BHOP, then JMM vs. Diaz, Mayweather vs. JMM.
A shame that JMM never got the 3rd fight with Pacman. Chased him through the weights, but unfortunately I only see Marquez declining from here on in. I'd be disappointed if the fight with Pac did happen and JMM was past his best and got beat comprehensively, as I believe he beat him twice.
I think JMM's handlers know that Khan would be too much for him. They say that they don't want JMM to be seen as a stepping stone for Khan but you're only a stepping stone if you lose the fight. JMM needs to get back down to 135 to still be a threat. At 140 he will struggle
Us JMM fans already knew that the only way Pac would accept a third fight with Marquez was for Marquez to have declined significantly. .....the Pac team still dont feel comfortable with taking a third JMM at any other weight but Welter.
Since their last meeting, Pacquiao's development has been frightening. Don't for one minute think the outcome of the 3rd fight would remotely the same as the other two. JMM fans should be thanking God that the trilogy was never completed. Mark my words, Pacquiao from Diaz onwards would run JMM through the ground!
I dont see JMM being competetive with the top guys at 140/147 so 135 it is. Perhaps Guzman vs JMM at 140 would be interesting though.
Even at lightwelter, Pac would run over JMM. The only weight where JMM can be competitive with Pac is at 135, and Pac is not going to go back to that weight.
