This is exactly the reason that fighters should weighin at the day of the fight.......or the new idea circulating to weighin the day before, but have a second weighin the day of the fight and not be allowed to gain a Xamount % a few hours before the fight. Somebody mentiond that Mayweather fights fighters bigger than he is and is sucessful......that is'nt the norm in boxing however. Mayweather's special combination of talent (speed, quickness, and manueverablitly all at the highest level) makes him able to beat guys much bigger than he is. Mayweather can turn into a runner anytime he wishes, cause he has the God given gift of leg speed. ......most fighters however are not like Mayweather.....they have to fight, chopdown, and dig deep......to these fighters, being outweighed by 10+ pounds becomes a huge disadvantage. Simply put, I thought the weight advantage by Guzman made all the difference in the world. Yes Guzman boxed well, but Soto landed quite a few good shots that would have imo wore and chopped down Guzman had they both weighed relatively the same. As it was, the tree was too big and thick for Soto to chop down! Quite frankly, I dont like it when a fighter has a huge weight advantage over another. Its not Guzman's fault, he's playing by the existing rules, but boxing has got to do something about this imo! Boxing changed the day of the weighin's because they it was too dangerous for fighters to fight dehydrated......I say its even more dangerous that a junior lightweight fight someone his same skill level that outweighs him by 13 pounds (two weight divisions bigger!)atsch The choice to dehydrate to make weight is the fighters choice....so putting himself in danger because of it, is his choice. .....a fighter like Soto making the 130 lbs limit and having to fight another fighter 13 lbs heavier, is'nt his choice.....Soto an others in the same situation he was in tonight, is putting himself in even more danger in an already dangerous sport, and it is'nt being done by his choice. I was mad as hell when Gatti almost killed Joey Gamache, and although it did'nt come to that today, I'm still mad, as it could very well have put Soto in the same danger Gamache actually went through! When is boxing going to have the balls to do something about this, when somebody gets killed????????:-( :fire
I mentioned PBF only to antagonize him, because I am sure he would come back with something stupid. Regardless, they should change the rule. But they haven't, and so it is what it is. Guzman has always had a solid chin. And it IS the norm for fighters to come in far over the weight limit on fight night. Is it right? No.....but it does happen alot.
Weighing in on the day of the fight would just lead to fighters being more dehydrated. It's not the solution. Fighters do whatever it takes, and that includes often pretty reckless behaviour. The rules need to save them from themselves, not to make it advantageous to put yourself in danger through excessive dehydration and the like. What we need is some sort of test of how hydrated someone is. Then they have to weigh-in at the weight, and at a minimum dehydration level. If they're too heavy they don't make weight, but neither do they if they are dehydrated, that way no one can dehydrate themselves down.
I think singling out Guzman is rather pointless. He is just one of many. The system in place allows this behaviour to happen.
They do weigh ins the day before the fight so they can have pictures and stories printed in the papers, vids shown on the TV, all for extra promotion for the fight. Actually, I like the idea of weighing in 1 day before the fight, for publicity, and then weighing in again just before entering the ring. I know most fighters today will go up 1, 2 maybe 3 divisions because of that, but at least it will make the real, legitimate and natural fighters in their weight class be the world champions, and not just the masters of cutting weight. BTW this isnt a knock on Guzman, I know 95% of fighters today are probably fighting way below their actual fighting weight.
guzman got weighed with his clothes on. no way was he 148. showtime did the same thing with clottey saying he weighed 170 the guy was weighed in full attire.
Its more than ridiculous, its insane! There are'nt that many fighters that would be able to rehydrate and add 15% of their weighin weight in the next 24 hrs. ......its just extremely disadvantageous, and dangerous to the fighter thats opposing that fighter. Like I said in a previous post, the fighter at a weight disadvantage here is not chosing to be at that disadvantage, its just that the rules as they exist are allowing this type of nonsensical disadvantage. If there are weight divisions, then why in the heck are fighters stepping into the ring seperated by as much as two and sometimes three weight divisions??? Its insane! If weighin's were held as they were before, the fighter dehydrating knows of the risk he is taking, and its more than likely that he's not going to go through extreme measures to dehydrate, knowing that he's going to fight in a few hours. Its likely in this case that he would be fighting in the weight division where he knows he's not going to hav to go through extreme measures to make weight.......but as it is now, sometimes the fighter that is being put in danger by fighting someone who outweighs him by plenty, in many cases the fighter at a disadvantage has no idea that he's being outweighed by 10, 15, or more pounds.
He has been, and I guarantee you that both Pac and Guzman would'nt be fighting at 130 lbs if weighins were held the day of the fight!
Same day weigh ins should be the answer. Who cares if nearly all the champions (except the heavies) vacate their titles and go up to their natural weigh division? And IMO it will help us fans/historians to match up an old time fighter to a modern fighter in a fantasy match up. A bad thing here would be mostly midgets will be qualified to fight at straw weight. :yep
