Bruno just seemed to have it over Bugner in that fight, I rate Bugner higher than Bruno as a fighter though.
Thanks for that Kenmore (these are my favourite boxing stories) - jeez Liston was a beast - wonder how many (if any) other champions and/or contenders Liston sparred with?? I have some footage of an exhibition with headguards against Earnie Terrell and I know Sonny sparred a lot with a young George Foreman - does anyone know anymore Liston sparring stories?? against any other past/present/or future contenders he might have shared a ring with behind closed doors?
Cool, all my favorite fighters boxing eachother Always loved watching Bugner outpoint someone, with that long jab and steady movement. Bugner use to spar Liston? awesome. Would've loved to see them actually fight. Chuck wepner vs Joe bugner, even in my head I can't see wepner winning that, too crude. Bugner has the advantages. Thanks for putting these fights up, there would be no way I would find em on my own..
I've heard that Bugner's win over Jimmy Ellis was probably his best performance post-Frazier. I wish I could find that film somewhere.
I see the Richard Dunn fight as being Bugner's best post Joe Frazier performance. Okay,Dunn was no world beater, but Bugner certainly went about the job with enthusiasm stopping his man in one.
google "rubin carter sparred liston". You should find a google book link, page 78 - 79 of a book on Carter, tells the story of them sparring.

Joe Bugner was a very good fighter, and probably underappreciated in some circles. His style and low level of aggression, made him look dull to watch at times, but as a boxing fan, I can certainly appreciate his strategy and careful approach.. Its no wonder that he was stopped on very few occasions. Had his punches carried a bit more snap, I think he would have been one of the greater forces to be reckoned with.. Its also amazing that his career started at age 17 and didn't finish until he was close to 50.... Bugner is a great credit to boxing.
I think he had a pretty good punch but as you said, showed very little aggression most of the time. Interestingly he had won all but one of his fights by a knockout early on in his career until Ulric Regis tragically died after a fight with Bugner. I'm sure that had a lot to do with how he approached to boxing. He only ever went at opponents that he hated. Bugner is headbutted and bitten by Winston Allen, see his response: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAns-ydx8KQ[/ame] 2:55
Bugner comes back to stun Frazier after being devastated and nearly knocked out by a left hook: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W-zX_27WWs[/ame]
Bugner really looked to be in good shape against Joe Frazier. One of the hall marks of Bugner's career, was that he usually showed up trim and fit. He was a tall guy, firmly built with light brown or almost blonde hair.. I bet he was thought of as a stud by a lot of the women of his day.
He plonked himself down next to me at the fights once, said hello in his high voice ,he is a very big guy! I am glad he wasn't in front of me ,I wouldn't have seen a thing!
Joe was an enigma.Early in his career he was popular and the fans took to him. However in too many fights after that he turned into a pacifist, and that's what turned the fans against him. Some said it was because he was an immigrant but that was nonsense. What frustrated people was that they knew it was in there but it all too often didn't come out. They looked at this 6'4" magnificent physical speciman with a great jab, good skills, decent power and strength,he at times backed Frazier up in there and they expected more.He must go down however after Lewis as our best heavyweight, he could go in there and live with anyone at a time when the heavyweights were probably at their strongest.
Just had a look at that book on Carter - thanks a lot for that unforgiven - that was scary -that bit about when Carter took his head guard off after 3 rounds of sparring and found it to be 'soaked in blood' because he'd been bleeding from both ears!!! :adminVery grim - that Carter must have been crazy going in with Liston.
