You made the mistake in asking if it was Wales or the UK. You see, UK stands for United Kingdom, United means England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Had you said was the fight in England or Wales you wouldn't have been asking a stupid question.
And what's with this, "He beat everyone they put in front of him" argument? If that were the case, then Brian Nielsen would've been knocking on the door of boxing immortality when he was 49-0. Or hell, they should've just given the title belt to the guy who broke Valero's first round KO record even though he had fought nobody. Now while Calzaghe has put together a string of good NAMES as of late, these NAMES are CLEARLY a shell of what they once were. Calzaghe deserves major credit for beating a prime Kessler. With that win he is arguably Top 3 at 168 All-Time, possibly Top 2. But if a long storied career centers around a good win over Kessler, and propped up by wins over a paper champ like Lacy who NEVER cracked a single Top 10 P4P list (the best comparison is to great contender John Mugabi), aged ex-champs in Eubank and Hopkins (way past 40), and a guy who has been knocked out twice in his last 6 fights, with another fight ending up in a long dominant decision loss, what does it say about the REST of this "storied" career in comparison to All-Time Greats?
By the way, this cherrypicking of Jones reminds me of when Chavez had Taylor the second time, who had won a second belt at welter but was clearly past it and slurring his words. Or likewise when De La Hoya picked on Chavez in the rematch.
Thats just like Hopkins best wins coming against a blown up Welter and a blown up Super feather. Other than that who has Hopkins beat? Apart from Tarver Hopkins's reign at Middleweight had as many bum defences as Joe has had. That was a very poor performance by Calzaghe, he didnt fight as well as he could and he still won.
If the blown up super feather is De La Hoya, then you must have been in a coma when he went on to win world titles at 135, 140, 147, 154, and 160 with KO's no less at every weight class except 160, then your argument is bunk. If the blown up welter is Trinidad, then you must have missed him ending up winning world titles at 154 AND 160 BEFORE Hopkins, by KO no less, then your argument there is also devoid of facts, especially since he has been fighting at the weight ever since. Hopkins has defeated more guys while they were Top 10 P4P in one year than Calzaghe has in his whole career. That speaks for itself.
Hopkins unified all three belts and beat all the middleweights. No other middleweight could make a big name for himself because he couldn't beat any one who Hopkins had already beaten and couldn't win a world title without beating Hopklins! It's no surprise that his most famous challengers came from the weight below given that fighters don't usually move down in weight.
Maybe i went a bit overboard with the blown up, but at the end of the day Hopkins best wins are against guys who are smaller than him. Take away DLH and Tito and tell me that Hopkins resume is great??? You cant, Hopkins and Calzaghe have very similar resumes inwhich they fought in one division cleaning them out.
Youve just hit the nail on the head. Hopkins ruled over a pretty dull division and the only two fighters that stand out are DLH and Tito. Calzaghe himself ruled over a pretty dull division until Lacy and Kessler came along. Yes i know Hopkins unified the division but unless Tito had come along Hopkins would probably be still defending the IBF.
