nope most of them would lose to Robin Ried or Eubank.

Anyways most boxer's career boil down to the big 3-7 fights they have and the rest is just fluff.

Name me some fighters who could beat Eubank, Ried, Kessler, Hopkins, Lacy & Jones and you are probally going to be naming an elite level fighter.

What makes Calzaghe a cut above is that he never lost, and normally even the best lose. It was probally just luck but that is how his career played out.

Good post though I still think Reid goes into that category, he's decent at best with not much to brag about. A basic competitive fighter, pretty much like Rahman though with a better chin.

yes i do agree that he'd get more respect if he'd had the guts to lose to Ottke, RJJ and others.

Joe idolised Marciano's undefeated record and wanted to be like him so fair play if thats what he wanted - he paid the price for it by being seen as a smalltime champ.

Ottke is a joke, mind you, and should not even be mentioned on this thread. By that I mean he didnt just get quick stoppages from welsh refs agaisnt opponents who didnt care, Ottke got actual losses overturned time and time again, which is disgraceful. Ottke is MUCH worse.

i often think that had Reid been given the Ottke UD that he deserved, and the Calzaghe fight that he half deserved, he'd have been the unified SMW champion that noone else had been able to acheive before.

With that to live for he perhaps wouldnt have burned out so quick, and would have ruled SMW for years and been debated as a contender for greatest SMW ever.

I really think those unfair losses he sufferedt burned his wick out extra fast.

Can't disagree with you there because I believe the exact same thing and I admit his lack of interest in the long run is what forces me to become a harsh critic.

Then again I'm not the one that suffered those unfair losses so only he knows how it feels. The vicious training camp, isolation from close ones, harsh routine, carefully selected food.... and MANY more.

yeah its a great shame he let himself go. Much like Calzaghe, we will never now know how good he could have been if he'd tried.

'lucky they were fortysomething when I fought them' thought Calzaghe after scraping to wins over grandads.

Like I said I have no beef at all with Joe getting big bucks fighting in the UK taking little risk at all. That is fine with me. What I think is ridiculous is how the Calslappy faithful act as if Joe's resume is full of HOF opposition when it isn't. Joe made a great living beating mid level opposition. Period, end of discussion....

The 39 year old worse for ware Jones? Who couldn't beat that version? The declining Hopkins? Some could beat that version. Lacy sucked, all could beat him. Eubank was on the backside of his career as well, most guys off him too. Kessler and Reid weren't old when Joe fought them, but were one dimensional and most guys would beat them too. People can try as hard as they want, but Joe's resume isn't going to get any better no matter what get's said. History will not be kind to this guy. Joe is Ottke version 2.0...

well yes the fanboys are a bit odd.

theres always some. not HOFers, I mean, fanboys.

Eubank is the only one who can qualify as HOF thats near prim but he was still long way off prime. Yet Kessler and Reid were definitely good opponents too. Veit was a joke, lol.

Calzaghe ran away from the sport when the going got tough (getting KD by old men with no power), he knew he wont be able to use experience and ring intelligence to deal with the young guns of SMW and LHW.

The vast majority of his undefeated record is from skill, but there is also a part which is from cowardice.

    -----------------------------------

On Calzaghe's SMW resume, there is only one tough opponent. Kessler.

Other than that, I say Duran the former LW would eat up that resume, possibly beating Kessler too.
