He's still a good fighter, and I give him even more respect because the other top heavyweights wouldn't even take on a risky fight like this. So sick of careful matchmaking to "protect the zero". So sick of fighters only fighting once a year.
Not really. Yes, it's a legitimate stoppage. No arguments there. However, a doctor's stoppage is not the same as knocking out an opponent in my eyes.
Yeah plus had his eye not given in he might have done what he does best by his pressure & combinations throughout the next half of the fight & then the dialogue would differ.
With Joyce there's always a strong chance that he would, i wasn't even worried Joyce was staggered as you just expect him to weather all that for the eventual pressure win.
Very good post. With this vicory, a very firm top eight, with Zhang, Hrgovic and Joyce all in it, has been established.
I'm convinced that these guys who act like the forum is one large collective of people with similar opinions come from reddit where conflicting opinions are deleted or downvoted into oblivion making it look like everyone agrees with each other.
I agree with this. As accurate and hard as Zhang hits, I’d say 2-3 more straight lefts to that eye and they would be dealing with a more serious injury. No need for that. That eye was more than just a bad cut. Guys with granite chins and a come forward style might stay conscious but their skull/face can only take so much of THAT type of power.
I picked Zhang over Joyce. After the Parker fight, Joyce was boosted to a mythological level, better than Tyson and Foreman according to some (younger folks). Old Foreman (say, 1991 era) would have stopped Parker in 3 rounds.
You are correct if the same poster’s are making these claims. Otherwise it’s just a difference of opinions from different posters. Next.
yes, he was ridiculously hyped. mostly because boxing media gassed it all up. perpetuating the myth that he was more than what your eyes tell you he is. and most people know just enough about boxing, to make them think they know about boxing.
I'd like to see Joyce get right back in there with Sheldon. It's a tough fight but a winnable one for him if he gets the tactics right. He would have been in with a great chance down the stretch last night had he not damaged his eye (not intimating that the injury was a fluke at all, his eye got f***ed up because Sheldon kept hitting it with his brutalist left). But let's say he takes things a little more cautiously next time and doesn't get his eye busted up the pattern of the fight changes quite drastically. He could take a rebuilding fight against some patsy next, but I don't think Joyce has the time or the momentum to do that, and the longer he puts it off the less the rematch matters. Joyce knew it was all or nothing at the age he turned pro, and he shouldn't be worried about taking another loss at this stage.
