Daniel's going to do a DDDemolition job on the always overrated IMO Joyce. It will be a brutal coming out party.
I think you couldn't be more wrong. Joyce peaked as an amateur and his slow stiff style will see him used as target practice by the faster and also very hard hitting Dubois who is on the rise.
This. Dubois is an enormous talent, I honestly can't believe the way fans tend to overrate Joyce. Why is Joyce being held in such high esteem? What am I not seeing?
You take a first glance at Joyce, he's clumsy, awkward, leaves himself open, but looking the part on the surface with pretty technique, solid fundamentals isn't the be all and end all, plenty of clumsy, awkward looking heavies have succeeded like Foreman, Vitali and Fury. Joyce should of got gold in Rio he did that well not due to luck but because that ugly style of his is effective. I wasn't high on Joyce at all for a long time but I am thinking he's better than he looks, he's had the success he's had for a reason. Joyce I think perhaps falls into this category of fighter, better than he looks on the surface. One he's huge, 2m tall and 260lbs plus and unlike most people with that size he has a limitless engine or so it seems with a work rate to match. Look at his footwork, it't far superior to Dubois'. For such a big heavy guy he moves in and out of range well, he's rarely stationary for long. Dubois in contrast just stands there right in front of his opponent. That's worked so far as he's over matched everyone he's fought but against someone like Joyce who will be just as aggressive at times it could leave Dubois open to be countered. He'll fire his shots and then will be there to be hit if Joyce hasn't backed off. It's a common mistake from novices with power we saw this flaw early on in Joshua and Wlad. The jab, Dubois has a really good jab, it's a ram rod jab, really eye catching when it lands. But it's one dimensional he really only uses one way as a way to work his way in by throwing it to the head. Joyce's jab is more versatile, he uses it offensively and defensively, he varies where and how he throws it, that combined with advantages in height, reach and movement will see Joyce winning the fight when on the outside. Can Dubois fight going backwards? We haven't seem him really do it, can he get the leverage needed to create that power when going backwards? Joyce will no doubt be pushing him back at times, as Dubois rests, Joyce will work and force Dubois back and if Dubois can't fight well on the back foot it will encourage Joyce to be more aggressive and keep Dubois subdued on the rear foot. For me Dubois' best chance is early, jump on Joyce before he warms up before Joyce's work rate is allowed to drain him and force mistakes. Maybe Dubois can do it, Joyce can be sloppy defensively at times with his desire to press the action but I see a dramatic Dubois win as less likely than Joyce eventually overwhelming him with his superior size, work rate and boxing ability.
Good post. Even with the thorough analysis you just provided, I still don't rate Joyce. Don't ask me why but every now and then you just have that with certain fighers I suppose.
My thoughts exactly. I've nothing against Joyce, but whenever I see him box, he just seems so slow and stiff, and nothing he does really impresses me.
See the thing with overall experience - as important as it is - is usually trumped pretty decisively by talent, raw physical ability and strength, and good enough technical skills to make all that matter.
Timestamped. Does anyone else love it when Joyce does this? This content is protected The man is hilarious!!
