It's hard to definitively say how most of the majority of the top ten would do against Joyce because none of them have fought a boxer remotely like him. Yes, he's slow and easy to hit, but he's relentless - with a decent chin it would seem - and the unrelenting mental and physical pressure he brings should not be underestimated. That's gonna disrupt game plans and mind sets. Until we see him in with the likes of Whyte or Parker we cannot be sure if his unique attributes are enough to overcome his shortcomings but I suspect his effectiveness might be greater than the sum of the parts....
Had only seen Joyce on TV until last night but was shocked at how slow he is. Defence is non existent and he is going to have to be matched very carefully from now on to get anywhere near a title shot. He is being moved quickly but he’s a KO waiting to happen
I said I agree with the ortiz bit, the only other fighters i can see him beating is hugie fury, maybe you can add parker and takam to the list. but after that I just can't see who else he beats he just gets hit too much and clean as well yes he has a decent jaw but Joshua wilder whyte Povetkin swing that jaw right round like daffy duck.
Joyce has zero defense and is painfully slow and plodding. As soon as he fights someone solid, they will pick him apart and expose him.
I had previously wondered if he'd be a problem for the likes of Joe Parker, but the Joyce of last night would get picked apart - it's not like Parker hasn't fought a relentless fighter before (Carlos Takam), but Joyce is slow and less movement than Takam and most importantly... Joyce had POOR defense. Stiverne was getting him with big telegraphed overhand rights and did rattle Joyce a little. Joyce would get picked apart by most/all top 10 guys by yesterday's effort, he seems to be able to take a shot but a KO wouldn't be necessary if he takes that much punishment from a morbidly obese guy who was gassed by the second round and content to just throw a couple of overhand rights per round.
Wasn't Impressed with JJ if i'm honest. Good output, but looked so slow and easy to hit. Add to that most of his punches are arm punches. He does have a chin, but that will only take you so far.
Elite SHW amateur and European silver medalist and Commonwealth gold medalist Frazer Clarke fought JJJ four times in the amateurs and has sparred hundreds and hundreds of rounds with AJ and he rates JJJ very highly and so does Dave Allen who has shared a ring with Luis Ortiz, Dillian Whyte, sparred hundreds of rounds with AJ and has also sparred Tyson Fury among many others. They both say that sharing a ring with him is a lot more difficult than you think it is from watching him on film. I put him in the same category as Kownacki, Pulev, Parker, Brezealle, Povetkin, Chisora, and Miller. He has a decent shot at beating all those gents. His chances get thinner with Ortiz, and Whyte and real thin with AJ and Wilder although, because styles makes fights, He would give Fury a hard time.
I've heard similar things about Joyce. His style seems to cause guys fits, though if it's just due to his combination of size and workrate or something less obvious I don't know. Agreed. I don't like to see any heavyweight come in heavier than 250, even if they do appear to be in good shape like Joyce. Boxers are at their best when they're mobile and athletic, not walking tanks full of muscle.
Looked like a tall, strong, young(ish) man beating up a fat, unmotivated, old guy to me. Very one sided and a mercy act from the referee to stop it. Stiverne's occasional swings didn't seem to bother JJ. Not a step up really. Didn't learn much about JJ he just dished out the punishment with his opponent up against the ropes and I was surprised Stiverne didn't cave in earlier. However you can't argue that JJ is no good based on who he could beat in the top 10. If you have to bring those guys into the picture then he's obviously got something.
I do think he maybe better than he looks. I remember him from the amateurs and he was nothing special, but something changed in the last 2 years of his am career he suddenly peaked and was beating guys you wouldn't imagine him beating and winning medals. He really surprised me in Rio he should really of won gold. Looking at him you could see him beaten by Hrgovic but he hammered him in WSB and Yoka should be too fast and too good but he would be 2-1 against him if he had gotten the Rio decision. He's ugly to watch but he's effective. I think he's at his peak right now I don't think he can get much better just more experienced. He needs to step up this year if he's not to waste his prime. Agree he looks better closer to 250, his pacing looks better, though even at 265 not many can live with him in regards to work rate.
