This fight is a 50/50 proposition but one thing tends to make me lean towards Louis and that is that for all his size and power, Lewis wasn't particularly aggressive. At times he looked a little timid. Against Holyfield, a man roughly the same size as Louis, Lennox didn't really take the fight to Evander the way I thought he would and should. He seemed content to box from the outside and let Evander stay in his comfort zone. This could be problematic against Louis. I can see Joe getting close enough to whip in a hard fast combination thay makes Lennox think twice about getting aggressive and gives Louis more reason to pursue him. Louis would be the best 2 fisted fighter that Lennox ever fought in regard to both speed and power. And if Joe gets Lennox in any kind of serious trouble I don't see Lewis escaping. This seems to put Lennox in a bind. He can't fighy timidly and hope to outbox Louis who was a very good boxer himself so at some point he will have to unload and trade with Joe and here's where it gets iffy. Lennox is a huge man no doubt but Louis seemed to thrive with a bigger target to hit. Slicksters gave him trouble not monsters. Buddy Baer knocked Joe clean out of the ring only to get the living **** kicked out of him when he got back in. Who's to say he could'nt do the same to Lewis? A lot of questions here but I'd still lean a little towards Joe in this one...Though it certainly could go the other way.
It really is fascinating to go back through this thread and read some of the responses ( including my own ) that were posted as long as two and half years ago.. i for one can say that my opinion on this subject hasn't changed a wink...
I am always pleased, but never surprised, to see how spot-on correct and insightful my comments are. I should have my own forum only to myself.
Note that he absolutely crushed all 3 of them in the rematches, and was 5-1 against these people who gave him "nightmares".
There's a difference between punching power, and the skill to put together accurate, fast, dangerous combinations. Lewis hasn't fought anyone remotely close to Louis in terms of combination punching ability.
joe louis would absolutely destroy lennox lewis, the size would not be a factor becase carnera was destroyed by louis, carnera was heavier and stronger than lewis with the same reach, and the skill would not be a factor because joe louis was simply better than lennox lewis, louis had faster hands, he got great combinations, he was a great counter puncher,he had great stamina,he was very skilled,he was the best finisher ever and lewis did not have the best chin. louis by knock out, no question about
I guess we should all pack up and call it a day then, because it seems you are the authority on heavyweight boxing. Your argument covers all area's of both fighters and really can't be argued against.
Louis never had much trouble with the bigger men and would slip in underneath them to deliver his punches. As good as Lennox is I don't see it going much differently than usual for Joe who would chop him down like a tree.
