All the evidence suggests Liston was around 40 when he faced Ali. All his close friends attest to that. Renowned journalist Jerry Izzenberg said he was way older than stated. So did Emanuel Steward and few of Liston's opponents. His mother was illiterate and changed her mind way too often to be taken serious. The tree on which his birthdate was written was indeed cut down, but your claim that the last numbers were 30 is horse****, nobody else can back you up in that, you made it up. The doctors that examined his torn shoulder said he was around 40 years old, the coroner that performed the autopsy on his body said he had the traits of a 50 year old.
Emanuel didn't even know Liston. Muhammad Ali that he was ugly but old. He was listed as 20 years old in 1950 and he was not older than that. His oldest birth date is 1930 at best.He wasn't that old. He looked older and aged fast because too much of drinking, drugs and his body was destroyed since his early age by hard work on fields.
Yes it is true claim. Sonny told that Story and asked them when they asked him:Are you calling my mom a liar. His mother was illiterate but not all his siblings were like that. Many siblings claimed that Sonny was not older than 1930.
Quick fists don't necessarily negate Liston, a la Clay. Floyd had very quick fists and could put together great combos, neither of which helped him. One needs the movement to get Sonny off his linear pursuit. The waterbug Clay had that kind of wide, lateral redirection. Given Sonny's freakish length and range, you really had to move quick and wide to get him out of position. As we know Louis never exhibited such mobility. He was efficient, heat seeking destruction. This match-up has nothing but fireworks written on it. For as hard as Williams hit, he didn't project as much damage in such a short time as did Louis. Both are going to hit and be hit. Let the pieces fall where they may.
Definitely not. But faster plus bigger is an awful combo to overcome, and the rarest. You really don't see bigger, faster heavyweights losing to smaller slower ones often.
Sonny lied about his age cause it suited his career. The idea that his illiterate mother's contradicting claims are accurate is laughable.
You don't need to know him, Steward heard from those close to Liston. Yet the 1950 Census lists him as 27 in 1950.
Sonny did not lied, he claimed that was born before 1932, around 1930. His story was confirmed by his siblings too. Sonny was 39, he just aged fast due to genetics, hard work, cocaine and boze.
That is not argument. Many people who knew Liston said that he was not that old. And another census listed him as 22 years old in 1952. According to one sibling who was just year older tham him, he was younger than that sibling that was born in late 1928.
If I am correct two sisters and 2 brothers. Sonny said that he liked that sister more than any other sibling he had but I can't remember her name.
I would try my best to find that. I also had pictures of Baer and Liston together on old computer. I would try to find that.
