I will not allow you to tell me that any fighter today is an evolution of Burley, Charles or Robinson. Louis is a better boxer than the welterweights we have today - Usyk is an amateur.
On the one hand Louis didn't cope with movers and slicksters that well ... but on the other hand, to deal with a guy like Usyk you want speed and accuracy and power and Louis has that. I lean towards Usyk but a guy like Louis could carpet bomb anybody if he gets a gap.
Lee Ramage ko twice Bob Pastor UD and KO Billy Conn ko twice Jersey Joe Walcott SD and KO Tommy Farr (not a runner type but mobile and slick) UD Seems like he handled them fine. I think a more accurate thing to say would be that slicksters/movers took longer to knock out than the other type of fighters, but that is universally true, not just for Louis. Who did better against that type of fighter than Louis did? Only name that comes to mind is Joe Frazier.
Conn befuddled him for 11 rounds. Walcott beat him. More to the point, Louis was bigger than all those guys. Here he's the same size or smaller and Usyk's footwork is next-level.
Conn was 3 rounds ahead at best, the other two score cards had it even and 7-5 for Conn. Hardly beffundled. He took him out cleanly in the end anyways. Walcott lost the decision. Even the guy who had him winning gave him a single round lead, and that was against a slower Louis. Usyk is bigger but he doesn't have Walcott's punch. And being bigger will not be adding to his elusiveness.
Walcott got stiffed. But yeah, sure, if you think Louis won, believe that. I remember RJJ getting spanked at the Olympics by whatsisname too. Usyk is better than both Walcott and Conn. Bigger and better means that Louis has things to worry about too
Actually, the slick, more mobile guys can actually benefit from being smaller - one of the common keys to their relative successes. Isn’t that what Usyk himself, competing at HW, has benefited from from thus far - being the smaller man? Is it correct to say that Olek’s toughest fights came at CW - most notably, his fight against 6’1” CW Mairis Briedis. At CW, Usyk fought against comparably sized opponents whose P4P skills approximated more closely to that of Uysk’s as opposed to the slower, lesser skilled, stamina challenged behemoths at HW. Against bigger opposition, Olek has enjoyed the obvious pros of being the smaller, better skilled and more mobile man. He’s done very well but he hasn’t been impossible to hit - and especially to the body. Louis also always enjoyed his own pros against his much larger opposition - and achieved successes that were more resounding and definitive than Olek’s victories against his much larger opposition. At 6’2 1/2”, 220 lbs, Usyk will be slightly taller but somewhat heavier than Louis - some extra lbs on Usyk aren’t entirely attributed to natural size - but that’s the Usyk we have on the table. Louis was in and around 200 lbs, au naturale, but likely could’ve added 20 lbs if he was similarly purposed and conditioned as Usyk has been - but again, no matter, we’re taking The Bomber exactly as he was - and that’s good enough. As @dmt highlighted, Usyk will present as a much bigger target than the likes of Conn. Physically, as compared to Louis, in Usyk, we’re talking a guy around the size of Max Baer with an extra 10 lbs on board. Of course Olek is better skilled and more mobile than Max but that’s the size of the physical target there for Louis - aside from how well that physical target managed to keep itself out of harm’s way. Also, when he was set to fire seriously intended power combos, Louis’ hands were faster than Olek’s - no question. Sublime hand speed. And there’s the Louis jab also - who has Usyk fought against with a jab than compares to Louis’? Si A lot of questions are being asked about Louis, particularly when highlighting his less outstanding performances as opposed to his very best. The aren’t so many questions being posed at Olek in kind, even after vision was provided reflecting his relative vulnerability to body punches - and as has already been said, Louis knew how and when to target the body for optimal results. I’m looking forward to the provision of the specific evolvements in boxing that have somehow left Louis behind, in the dust - if those evolvements are ever provided at all.
Braddock had 77 fights, 38 of them over the lhvy limit.Braddock was a decent right hand puncher. Louis did not say he would never ever defend against a southpaw,he said he never fought one, which rightie was around for him to fight Bettina?
I see Louis losing many rounds, and Usyk being caught in the later rounds Billy conn style of fight....
Prime Joe Louis always figured out his opponent's style, He may have had trouble with Usyk early on or even in the first fight, but Joe went to the body and head well and 15 rounds would favor Joe but 12 would be enough. I admire Usyk who is a talented guy, but Louis gets him RSC in a competitive matchup. IMO
