sthomas - some good points mate, but: Ali in 1964 - the one undisputed HW champ of the world and he would have beaten Liston 10 out of 10. Foreman in 1994 - the ultimate feel - good story, but Foreman was not the bet HW in the world. In his next fight, he needed a controversial decision against Schulz, ranked Nr. 12 at the time. Lennox Lewis, Bowe and Holyfield would have beaten that version of Foreman anytime, as would Moorer in a rematch. The points about equal training, science, nutrition - well then it is getting so hypothetical to the point of being irrelevant. Who knows, if there had been eveything of today's world available in the 1930's, maybe Joe Louis would have been a meth addict or play WOW ten hours a day, wasting his bxoing talent.
Watch Louis-Schmeling I: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lihT_ewxVko Can you see their styles, their body and lateral movements, their defense. Sorry that is not comparable to modern HW´s like Lewis or Klitschko or Tyson. You must be blind not to see that. And remember these guys weight was around 185lbs. not 230 or so. BTW Louis defense is not existing. Klitschko would land at will. Louis defense was crap. Nothin but crap. His left jab hangs somewhere at his waist after he throws it. He had no chin problem, but a defense problem. Schmeling landed his right hand at will and Klitschko has much more power in his right hand than 190lbs. Schmeling had. Klitschko by brutal KO within two minutes. As well as Lennox would do and Tyson, Holy, Bowe ans so on. The first flush right hand would KO Louis and believe me Klitschko would land it pretty easy. Louis is an open target for a modern 6`7" athlete with a huge range advantage and equal speed. Thats not a question of skills but a question of time. The athletes of the 30es are not at the level modern athlethes are. Never ever....esp. in the HW-division there is a big gap between the pre-war era and today.
1) The point is, Foreman won a championship in 94'. That cannot be disputed. Foreman was pretty damn competitive in his comeback era. It show's that Ali could be competitive any time any era. 2) Equal training methods and nutrition is something I will always take into account because this is a fantasy fight!!! It is absolutly relevant. Why would anyone omit this this when predicting a fantasy fight is beyond me. The meth. addict predictions, wasting time, etc. are not relevant as they are totally unkown personality traits. But I can bet, all other things being equal, if Louis was fighting today, he would be training and eating differently.
alot of people talk about klitschko like the year is 2003. it is almost 2008, we have a very new and improved klitschko as you will see when he makes sultan ibragimov look like chris koval.
louis by decision...he would have trouble with Wlads jab, but he was the best...he would be able to get inside rounds where guys today cant.
Klitschko has about 6 inches and 50 pounds of pure muscle over Joe Louis. Though Klitschko doesn't have Louis's precise combination punching and accuracy, Klitschko is still possesses tremendous punching ability for a man his size. Klitschko wins. Joe Louis was spectacular for his day and age, but athletes evolve throughout the course of 60-70 years.
Wladimir by KO early to mid rounds like 4 to 6 or so. Klitschko would wisely keep the fight on the outside since Louis was such a great inside fighter. Wlad would stun him with the jab & end it with a huge right hand up the middle. I'm a big Louis fan but this would be a bad matchup for him. I just can't see Joe getting inside enough to land that short right hand.
If I believed that I'd pick Joe to win by KO. I don't though, Joe's jab was excellent but only really effective vs. HW's of similar size.
Ditching the jab is a Louis specialty. If the peak version has a weankess for a specific punch it would be a sneaky right hand.
I respect your thinking here - I see what you mean - but I disagree. Louis is the better puncher out of these two even when Klitschko is on his game, when he isn't on his game, his punching takes a hit.
Louis would brawl against Klitschko and KO him early. The man could fight wars. He would apply pressure that Kliitschko wouldn't handle.
