I spaced on the head. No, Louis wasn't slow upstairs in terms of being dumb, but he also was not a good speaker, either.. He lacked formal education and spoke like a country boy... I'm sure Louis understood things better than he could articulate... As he aged into his 60s, he did seem jelled and somewhat senile in spurts... Alongside Joe Walcott on TV in circa--'77, Walcott looked younger and spoke much more clearly than Louis did.... MR.BILL:deal
Actually, I have known several folks who are rather smart to a degree, but for some reason they seem to take their sweet-ass time getting their point or message across during a conversation... Me being from sunny California, I just blurt and spit out what it is I wanna say... I talk fast but straight forward... :good I know some good ole boys here in Carolina that can take all afternoon just to order lunch off a menu at a restaurant... I hate that ****, too... :rofl MR.BILL:hat
Mickey Duff ,the promoter and matchmaker, spent quite a bit of time around Louis ,he found him to be quick witted and good with one liners ,once he got to know you .
If Louis stammered it was because he was always trying to say politically correct things, instead of just letting go with his feelings, etc... But since he was speaking mainly to a 1930s and 1940s media, its no wonder he was cautious... Still, aside from all that jazz, he was not a gifted, smooth gabber of mouth and words... :bbb MR.BILL:hat Note: Larry Holmes is not dumb, even though he often fails to pronounce some words correctly.... Holmes years ago used to say "Unawkwardox" instead of unorthodox.... **** it, I dealt with it... Same for Don King who simply invented words right up front during an interview...
Good point... I recall Ray Leonard saying he hated being asked following a tuff fight by the interviewer as to what just happened.... Ray liked to catch his breath, review the tape and then give a full statement later after he fully assessed the fight scenario.... I feel his pain there... MR.BILL:hat
Being glib shouldn't be confused with being smart or literate...Ali was glib, but he sounded pretty dumb at times..like when he and Cosell were reviewing his fight with Chuvalo a week or so later on Wide World...Cosell said "you seem rather subdued today"...Ali said "what do sudoobed mean"? He called Joe Frazier a "fugilist"...Louis wasn't quite as dumb as some people may have thought he was...I agree he probably had a learning disability of some kind.
Louis was hatched in 1914. I just don't see a typical black boy who's family was poor getting an education in the 1920s down in Alabama or up in Michigan during those times. I have no clue how far Louis actually went in school, but I'm guessing 6th or 7th grade at best... If Louis honestly graduated from high school I'd be stunned enough to qualify for a standing eight count... MR.BILLadmin
I'm pretty sure he had some mental problems after he retired. Thinking the government was out to get him. I also heard his son tried to get him some help.
I thought the same thing at first glance,Swarmer. Joe was restrained from talking too much,by his team. Don't do this.....don't be photographed with such and such by yourself....blah...blah. He probably felt awkward because he felt he had to speak other people's words all the time. This kind of verbal restraint came make anybody seem less articulate than they really are.
