Not sure where the OP heard this, but it was in Dan Rafael's notebook over at espn.com a week or two ago.

The biggest issue now for Mesi is getting him licensed to fight in places that are big enough for bigger fights.

New York will not license him, nor will Nevada ... Jersey? They havent tried.

He got licensed by Foxwoods (or was it Mohegan Sun?) but then the doctor said that he wouldnt assign a ringside doctor to cover the fight, all but killing any chances that Mesi could fight at the Connecticut casinos.

Twin River is a terrific venue to watch a fight but fans from Buffalo dont want to go Rhode Island .. no offense to any Rhodies on the board.

Joe didnt sell out Twin River the last fight against Shannon Miller and, in fact, there were more people there for Miller than there were for Mesi - I kid you not.

As for whether or not he should be fighting?? I say he should. Its his life and he truly, honestly feels that he is no more a risk to suffer another injury like the one he had as any other fighter out there today.

Thats what his doctors are telling him and he believes it. And for people who might say, 'he just found a doctor to OK him. He would have gone to 100 until he found one."

The fact is, there are doctors (plural) who have OK'd him. God forbid something happens to him in the ring ... those doctors are probably never going to be licensed again to practice medicine.

We had a similar situation here in Boston years ago with Reggie Lewis, the late Boston Celtic.

Reggie has a heat problem -- was told by a team of doctors (They were called the 'Dream Team') that he could no longer play. He then was told by one doctor, Dr. Gilbert Mudge, that he was alright to go back to playing in the NBA.

Well, Reggie died while practicing before the season and Mudge was sued and will live in infamy forever.

All I'm saying is that there is a lot to risk for a doctor not to have reasons to OK Mesi to fight again.

If he has medical reasons to believe that he can fight ... then he should be allowed to.

This is totally different than the situation involving Tommy Morrison. Because of Morrison potentially having HIV, he could pass that on to his opponent, the referee, his corner, etc ...

Anyways ... Mesi is fighting on April 4 against Terry Smith at Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, RI on ESPN2. The co-feature is probably 2004 US Olympian Jason Estrada against an opponent to be announced. Unbeaten cruiserweight Aaron Williams will likely be the swing bout on the card as well.
