Yes. You see, the middleweight division was Monzon's ideal place for his size and strength over all. All great fighters of the lower weight divisions have faced the peril of over reaching eventually and paying for it by fighting at too high a weight for their frames and thereby losing to someone of inferior skills who just happen to be in THEIR natural weight division. Monzon, like Hagler later on, made the decision to stay in their ideal weight class, and the results show that they were smart for doing so. What I was saying, was that in the event of a fight between Monzon and Conteh, if he (Conteh) presented his chin as a target, and Monzon landed on it, the fight would turn right then and there, either as a knockout for Monzon, or the beginning of a typical beatdown leading to a tko for the Argentinian.

Do you think Monzons right was that lethal or that Contehs chin was that fragile?.Griffith at 33 went 14 rds with Monzon ,at 34 the 15 rd distance,Bouttier went the distance with him once Valdes twice. Why do you think he kos Conteh who took punches from Saad Muhammad ,Alvaro Lopez and Jorge Ahumada,Conteh may not be an atg LH but he didnt lack a chin, plus he had good power.

Conteh was awonderful boxer and I thought it was a shame that he had so many problems with his hands. He may have been too big for Monzon to deal with, but if he exposed his chin, Monzon could have whipped over that big right of his and turened the whole thing into a nightmare for Conteh. Monzon was so effective and cruel with that right hand that if anyone could capitalize on a moment's lapse of defense on Conteh's part it would have been him.

john conteh fought his 1st 18 fights at heavyweight,a small one at that weighing around 180 pounds and he stopped 14 of them.monzon although a great was a fighter i never saw that much of.i'm sure monzon could of dealt with a lot of good light heavies, but doubt he could have beaten conteh.john was a superb boxer fighter who i think could have gone on to greatness if he's stayed on the straight and narrow outside of the ring.

Conteh by decision seems the sensible option, the extra weight coupled with an even skillset being the deciding factors. Either by late stoppage or UD.

Allrite Ron, mate. Did ya have a good weekend, then? (appart from the Mackems result ;) ). To be fair you's were extremely unfortunate from what I saw of the highlights West Ham just hit on the break twice and that was game over. Nobby is a legend, although his goal was fortunate. I still hate that wee toerag Bellamy though (probably as much as you :D). The Crues lost as well, I posted a wee rant on another thread somewhere. :verysad

Ps: NUFC vs Spurs tonite, I'm heading over for this game tonight immediately after work. Reasonably confident about getting a positive result given our good home form so far this season, but with the Toon you can just never tell what side of our game is going to turn up. A 2-1 win would do me with Martins and N'Zogbia getting our goals. I'll not for one second be putting any money down on the result, however. You can never tell.

just seen this mate.the weekend started well with my own team winning 4-0 to put us 3rd,then basically going downhill from there, what with the rugby then the mackem's.sunderland did more than enough to win,but we all want to be spared the "unlucky losers"tag because basically that's what you are a loser.anyway what happened to the crusaders?

Monzon wasn't whipping too many people above 160, and Conteh wasn't one of them.Conteh TKO 5 Monzon.

I like Conteh by decision at least. Both notorious partiers, but I favor the naturally bigger man.

Monzon was an all-time great but he was perfect for the middleweight class as Hagler was. 160 was there home it is not to say Monzon like Duran could have not moved up succesfully. Duran's perfect weight was 135 but he moved up strong to welter and beyound even though his age was working against him and his lifestyle. As far as Conteh he was a perfect 175lbs and an excellent fighter, I do not think he reached a level of greatness that Monzon did, so we really do not know if Monzon like Hopkins would have gained more from the move up then the loss. Those are the unanswered questions.

Conteh competed in a brutal time in the LHWT division... Monzon was tall (5'11) for his division but was not meant to move up and that's why he stayed where he was.... I think a foray into the lightheavies, especially agianst someone of the great quality of Conteh, would have been ill advised.

    Conteh UD Monzon

It would take an elite banger like Foster or Saad Muhammad (Franklin) to kayo Monzon IMO.

I heard a rumour that Conteh's hand problems were caused by him getting his hand broken with a hammer by some gangsters as punishment for screwing around with a famous British comedians wife.

It's probably bull**** but has anyone else heard this rumour?

An old villian I used to drink with in London told me this and also that Freddie Mills was a serial killer (which I've subsequently seen alleged elsewhere but never proven).

So my source is not exactly impeccable but Conteh was a notorious pants man so it's possible he annoyed someone along the line.

Conteh by lopsided decision. He was proven at 175 where as monzon was not.
