An inspiration, and such a cinematic three act finale in Jacobs-Parker-Alvarez. His courage in Guadalajara especially remains mythical in my mind.
Could've fought for a couple more years. Probably got offered an Assistant Head Coach job and took it.
Yep. Lower pay than what a televised fight or two a year would net, but a steady guaranteed paycheck... and way safer. There was some gas left in his tank but if he's getting stopped by Mungbean at this point what realistic path did he have to that world title?
The Gorilla can hold his head high - in my eyes he was a de-facto champ after being jobbed against Callum Smith! Wish him all the best, and sound bloke by all accounts!
Absolutely fair play to Ryder. Had a great career and got out at pretty much just the right time. Not unexpected from someone of his straight and solid character though. Hype free and his feet were always firmly on the ground. His heart was mahoosive and his quiet self belief was 1000% genuine. Hope he sticks around in boxing as a pundit or trainer, or both, as he's still got a lot to give. Happy retirement, Mr Ryder!
Think he was a MW and may have had a better chance getting a title staying there. Sure he claimed he felt better having less of a cut at 168, but let's be real, compare the size of him to Groves or Jack or obviously Smith. He was up against it at 168.
I love The Gorilla, long time unabashed very vocal fan. He had a good career, got done wrong way too many times, and I wish his last match had a different outcome, he was clearly bordering on shot, but like most fighters, couldn't resist tempting fate one more time. But at least he didn't go out as shamefully as Miguel Cotto. So happy retirement John! One of the true good guys in the sport. He's getting out at the right time and made some nice cash along the way. It got deleted. Incorrectly flagged by Google. I went back and looked it over. I had it 116-112 Ryder, as did @f1ght3rz While @Wizbit1013 @exocet76 had it 115-113 Ryder. @Serge said it was really close, and hard to score, but leaned Ryder. @drenlou and @PinoyProdigy had it 115-113 Jacobs. As did @Fogger @David B @lobk @FrankinDallas @timeout @Chuck Norris @sasto @jaytxxl and @Ducklerr said 7-5 either way. @theanatolian had it 7-5 Jacobs, but said either way was fine. @Braindamage @Glassbrain and @gollumsluvslave had it a draw. @The Professor had one of the wildest card he's ever had with 117-111 Jacobs. @Olu G. Rotimi @MidniteProwler @lufcrazy and @DramaShow had it 116-112 Jacobs. There was roughly 20 pages or so of people bitching about Ryder's win, crying robbery, to which I replied. This content is protected This content is protected Here's the punch stats.... Punch Stats: Total: Ryder: 135/448 Jacobs: 123/651 Clearly Danny's accuracy was woeful. Jabs: Ryder: 14/169 Jacobs: 29/365 Power: Ryder: 121/279 Jacobs: 94/268 Jacobs Outlanded Ryder In: 1, 4, 5, 11, 12 Ryder Outlanded Jacobs In: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 10 Look how my scorecard corresponds to the punch stats. Round 1 Jacobs 10-9, close Round 2 Ryder 10-9, close Round 3 Jacobs 10-9, very close Round 4 Ryder 10-9, close Round 5 Jacobs 10-9, close Round 6 Ryder 10-9, close Round 7 Ryder 10-9 Round 8 Ryder 10-9 Round 9 Ryder 10-9 Round 10 Ryder 10-9 Round 11 Ryder 10-9, very close Round 12 Jacobs 10-9, close 116-112 Ryder The 11th they were split 14/11, with 12/11 in power punches. While the 4th, officially Jacobs outlanded him by a large margin, but they were weak shots, mostly deflected, while I thought Ryder's punches were more telling, and he was the aggressor throughout. Here was Pinoy's card. Round 1: 10-9 Jacobs Round 2: 10-9 Jacobs Round 3: 10-9 Jacobs Round 4: 10-9 Jacobs Round 5: 10-9 Ryder Round 6: 10-9 Jacobs Round 7: 10-9 Ryder Round 8: 10-9 Ryder Round 9: 10-9 Ryder Round 10: 10-9 Jacobs Round 11: 10-9 Ryder Round 12: 10-9 Jacobs 115-113 Jacobs Here, a Standalone Scorecard as a tribute might be in order. The Gorilla was a credit to boxing; it's shame he's retiring never having been a world champion, as by rights he should have been save the robbery vs Smith. Hope he enjoys his retirement
