But funny how Duke made his image as all-American hero while ducking the war ...

Good inside info ,that sits with a biography I read about him ,and several documentaries. :good
I beleive he came to regret things later,as did Jack Dempsey, Jack at least found some redemption during the 2nd WW, when he went ashore with the troops. Wayne never got a chance to redress his decision.

Remember, Wayne wore lifts/high healed boots, so when he stood up he'd have been around 6'7-6'8.

Would you mess with a guy that tall and that build?

From a grappling standpoint, hell even a boxing standpoint, a bigger man is an easier target than a smaller man would be. In grappling, a big man is easier to take down than a smaller man. In boxing, unless you're fighting a Lennox Lewis, if you can bypass a big man's reach, he can do very little to defend himself. So, yeah, I'd rather go after someone over 6'5" than someone my own size.

Give me someone my size (5'9, 180-190lbs) over a 6'5 220lb+ guy any day of the week.

    Call me crazy.

I read something in print years ago that John Wayne was a bit suspect and liked to wear little tight come hither shorts, dont ask me where I read that but it rather sticks it in the mind

Wouldnt surprise me if he was a bit phoney compared to Jiimy Stewart, Bogey etc

Jim Brown was right about him, definitely.Don't think he was the man everyone made him out to be.
